High blood pressure

#1

Hi all, ive had several checks today and my BP is 140 /80 as an average which i know is high. I do eat a lot of salt so ill definitely reduce this but is keto known for increased blood pressure? Any tips on reducing

Did you check at home or at the Docs? Mine goes through the roof at the Docs but is ok/slightly high at home… salt is these days thought to have little impact.

I guess my response would depend on what your bp has been in the past relative to how your lifestyle has changed. Without that info it’s pretty tough to say which direction you’re headed.

Generally, BP goes down for most, if it is elevated, when they get fat adapted. There are some theories that salt does and does not affect BP. If you measure at home take your device to your doctor and compare.

I have had persistent high BP since I was about 26yo and I’m now 65. I’m on 3 medicines. My BP did not go down on keto initially and I had measurements higher than yours. I have noticed some significant improvement with:

  • recent weight loss (getting past my initial weight loss stall)
  • Time restricted Feeding leading to IF 18/6 and then OMAD fasting. My theory is that my insulin response is so deranged that I needed to get to periods of no or very low insulin to get my BP down.

I’m also playing with deep breathing 50 breaths at least 3 times a day. That has a dramatic impact immediately and seems to carry some reduction in BP for an hour or more. With deep breathing, I have been able to get my BP to 112/66 or so.

My plan is to get back to mindfulness meditation which should help. But that will take probably weeks of practice before I see a marked improvement. I’m hoping as I approach 200 pounds (I’m ~ 225) my BP will drop significantly as well.

The deep breathing helps me. This is the video I learned about this:

I played with 10 breaths, then 20 etc. 50 does the trick for me and takes about 4 minutes to 6 minutes.
