High BG with high ketone levels

(Jenny) #1

Hello everyone!
I am desperate for some answers on what nite be going on with my glucose levels. I’ve been in and off a Keto diet for years. My glucose level while in ketosis has always been between 80/90. I recently went out of ketosis while on a months holiday. I have been back in ketosis just over a week and my ketone level is 2.2 on waking. The problem is my BG is very high since I’ve started back the past week and I have no idea why :frowning:. My BG in 160 at the moment and I’m a bit worried. Ive been to my doctor to have all my bloods done but won’t get results for a week also my doctor does not seem to know much about ketosis.im worried it could be ketoasidosis . Can anybody be so kind to share their view please? Many thanks , Jenny

Are you fasting at all? It would be interesting to see what happens with your BG level after a 24 hour fast. If you still have higher levels after 24 hours, more than likely, your body is producing them in response to some sort of stress…

If you do a 24 hour fast, test for BG often, as you don’t want extremely high BG readings along with high ketone readings.

Thank you for your reply, I will try fasting for 24 hours and check BG every couple of hours. Can you tell me what will fasting show me? Also if I start to eat again will it not go back to a high BG level? Many Thanks Jenny

By fasting 24 hours, you’re ridding your body (for sure), of almost all dietary blood glucose. So, this means that any remaining glucose is being produced by your body in response of demand or need (stress).

Does that make sense?

If I still have high BG in fasting , would this mean it could be Gluconeogensis? I don’t really want to be loosing much muscle tissue :frowning:

Oh and thanks for your time :hugs:

If it is Gluconeogensis, it would be unlikely to be muscle tissue. I would think that the body would prioritize sources that are easily accessible first. I’m no scientific expert, but you’ll still have protein sources in your dietary track for some time, and even if you didn’t; the body likes to recycle damaged cells as a source. It makes sense to me that the body would use muscle as a last resort…

This article might give you more insight as too what happens metabolically during a fast, and get you thinking in those terms:

Others can probably recommend other sources.

Thank you so much for take the time to write to me and your help. Ok, I’ve started the fast from 2.30 today so let’s see what happens . I will just have some green tea in the morning , I hope it does not affect BG , I’ve read up and it say it doesn’t? Thanks again, Jenny

Great source, but I can’t help but notice the final parts where obesity again is tied to overeating–in this case to lack of leptin. They completely miss insulin.

Hi EZB
Thanks for your comment , would you mind elaborating as I don’t quite understand what you mean? I am 61kg so not really obese but would say slightly overweight.
Thank you
Jenny

Hi , I’ve fasted for 26 hours . Tested my bloods throughout and they went no lower then 7.8. I tested ketones and BG on the 25th hour and ketone level was sky high at 4.5 and BG was also high at 8.4. I am totally confused now :frowning:. I’ve just eaten 20 mins ago and test BG and it 9.9 now :flushed:. Is this dangerous do you think? I don’t feel unwell but for years of doing Keto on and off it’s never happened with BG before and I can’t find an answer why anywhere on the internet , Thanks Jenny
