High A1C

#1

I have been on a keto diet for a year. My A1C was 6.6 October 2018, 6.4 November 2018 and February 2019. 6.3 March 2019 and two weeks ago(June 2019) it was 6.6. the doctor says I am diabetic. The 6.3 in March was a non-fasting lab. They were doing different test that I didn’t have to fast for and I did not know they were going to do an A1C. I was diagnosed with PVC’s(Premature Ventricular Contractions) beginning on March, the cardiologist put me 5mg of Bystolic once a day. I also quit coffee due to the PVC’s. I am confused because a keto diet does not support a high A1C. I have lost 24 pounds.

The doctor is also concerned that my Microalbumin Creatinine Ratio is elevated she says this means my kidney are leaking protein either due to the diabetes or high blood pressure. Could the elevated protein be due to the Keto diet. Thoughts?

Aren’t PVCs fairly common and do not affect longevity.?

If your doctor is correct with his diabetic diagnosis you are definitely in the right place. You’re not on insulin and it takes time before that stage comes and you have time to reverse that as many here did.

Right off, The creatinine microalbumin ratio. What were your numbers?

Are you sure you were properly hydrated for a couple of days prior to the test? I have spent 10 years on dialysis and one and a half now with a transplant. I had membranous nephoprathy while on dialysis and as a result was able to eat more protein than other patients because of spilling with my urine. I was loosing about 10grams per day. I will now post my last two microalbumin tests

2/11/19

5/10/19

As you can see my levels went down on the later test. The levels on the first test are in the above normal MicroAlbuminuria range. I was a bit dehydrated that time. It returns to normal on the later test.

Notice at the end of the last result the note about two of three tests in 3-6 months must show abnormally before a diagnosis is made.

Now you should ignore the non fasting test. And I must ask how tight you were with carbs between the two HbA1c tests where it rose to 6.6? Because it’s a three month average a bad period two months before the test will be averaged in. So it’s important to keep the carbs low. Stay strict and I’ll bet the next one drops.

Thank you for the information. My numbers are:
Creatinine 29mg
Microalbumin 1.3mg
Creatinine Microalbumin ratio 45mcg

I quit sodas years ago and I am not a big ice tea fan and I quit coffee in April, so I mainly drink water and a lot of it.

I am wondering if the Bystolic is impacting the A1C. I have read that Beta Blockers can affect blood sugar. I plan on messaging my cardiologist about the Bystolic.

Do you take daily glucose readings and if so are they elevated also?

Are you eating a high protein version of keto and was your BUN in the normal range?

I was diagnosed with large numbers of PVCs when I was 10. Cardiologists considered it benign and never prescribed anything for it. Other family members also have it—no treatment necessary for them either.

Beta-blockers are the other major class of blood -pressure-lowering drugs that have been implicated in causing diabetes or worsening diabetes control. … But beta-blockers also block the release of insulin by interacting with nerve signals to the pancreas and can thus lower insulin levels even when blood glucose is high.Apr 14, 2009

Bystolic is screwing your HbA1c results and probably pushing you towards diabetes. I gotta say those drugs should go ASAP, ask your doctor about an alternative BP medication that isn’t a beta blocker or calcium channel blocker if you can. Both these class of drugs did some damage or had negative side effects for me. Betas are nasty and have bad side effects on men if you know what I’m getting at. And lowering BP isn’t worth diabetes. If you’re doctor isn’t clear on what he’s doing to you I would seek another. It sound like the negative progression is his fault to me.

You’re value of 29 is <30 and in a normal range for a microalbumin to creatinine ratio. Not a for a creatinine only level.

Actual creatinine levels should be between 0.5 and 1.3 mg/dL, not 29

So the lab specs don’t make sense compared to the scales that I referenced.

I see nothing in an mcg. scale on my labs which are pretty extensive because of my renal history. :cowboy_hat_face:

I checked my labs and the BUN is normal.

Aha, mine is from blood work. :cowboy_hat_face:

As long as they are not more than 20% of your total heart beats.

#12

I should clarify during the 30 day monitoring period it was determined that 60% of the time my heart rate was over 100 and my blood pressure had been running a little high for the last year so the doctor prescribed Bystolic. Her thought was it would lower my heart rate, blood pressure and possibly decrease the. PVC’s.

Any idea if high Hematocrit affects A1C levels?

(Full Metal KETO AF) #14

I wouldn’t think red blood cell levels would influence blood sugar averages. :cowboy_hat_face:

I would say give it more time. If you’ve lost that much weight, that’s a good sign. HbA1c is an imperfect measure, as it relies in part on the lifetime of your red blood cells. If you have long lived RBCs, you have higher HbA1c than others with shorter lived RBCs.

Actually I noticed when I’m on thyroid pills but I have fewer PVCs. I had somewhere around 8000 in a day. So I’m at about 14.4%
