Hidden sugar

(wayne m bucknall) #1

so ive been on keto a few weeks now and initially i lost 14 pounds in the first week and now about 1.5 pounds a week since.
i eat bacon(not maple) and bbq pork rinds for no carb snacks.
today i was reading both ingredients and they both list sugar but when ran through fitness pal it says no sugar.
so am i accidentally knocking myself out of ketosis with this

Probably not. The first weight you lost was water weight. Fat loss will be slower because your body is less willing to part with it. 1.5lbs a week is really good.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #3

If your carb intake is low enough, the sugar in the bacon and pork rinds shouldn’t be a problem.

It sounds like what you’re eating is still working for you if you’re continuing to lose but this is a good example of how an app can be useful but doesn’t trump what’s on the label in your hands. Be sure to double check everything and always go with the actual label when it’s available.

They do have minuscule amounts of sugar depending on the brands. You can find sugarless bacon that is just as good, look for the bacon that says paleo. All of the flavored pork rinds have sugar of some sort (dextrose, maltodextrose, etc). Plain ones don’t.

It depends on how susceptible you are to sugar cravings right now to determine if you should be eating them. It is a personal choice.

Alot of processed meats do have sugar in them in varying amounts. I always read the ingredients, there are about 20 different names for sugar.

I don’t eat any type of sugar, but many do eat very small amounts that have been added to some foods with out poor results. YMMV
