Hidden carbs in keto food while eating out?

#1

Does anyone have history with hidden carbs in omelets, scrambled eggs (milk in both) or sugar added to bacon while eating out? Or equivalent? Pitfalls to watch for?

You honestly never know what you’re going to get from a restaurant kitchen no matter what the waiter tells you as far as carbs go. Too many variables and cooks doing different things at times. You’re rolling the dice eating out unless you’re getting a steak or something simple, steamed broccoli and salad type stuff. Restaurants also are generally using seed oils for cooking and salad dressing and so on.

I avoid eating in restaurants because I have spent my life working in them and generally your health is not of primary concern. Eating in restaurants a lot will lead to poor health.

IHOP single handedly ruined my trust in ordering omelettes while out.

Why? What happened?

#5

They use pancake batter in their eggs unless you specifically tell them not to.

(squirrel-kissing paper tamer) #6

WHAT? To increase volume, I suppose, and save money? Oh the shame!

@anon2571578 I literally had this in my facebook feed :joy:

You might should have to sign a health insurance waiver to get a t-bone at IHOP, but that ain’t nothing compared to Waffle House. People out here in the Pacific Northwest don’t know nothing about Waffle House.

And even then sometimes they still do. A keto friend was just telling us about having a crazy glucose spike after eating the omelets that he TOLD them to not put the batter in.

We have Waffle Houses. Spent many o’after drinking nights in there way back in the day. Their menu was mostly just pictures because you have to be intoxicated to want to eat there…

According to Siri, the nearest one to Portland is about five hours away. I was disappointed when I moved out here and discovered they didn’t have any, because none of my friends now can have The Experience.

Exactly!

There’s one about a mile away. It failed its health inspection last month. Ain’t no “experience” worth salmonella or whatever.

#14

Because you really can never tell what hidden carbs there will be, I’ve just gotten into the habit of fasting leading up to (or after) eating out to act as a buffer to compensate for any hidden carb surprises.

That is insane. I mean really insane.

I think we need to get to the point where menus and include the full ingredient list for all items.

(Lazy, Dirty Keto 😝) #16

I, too, learned this the hard way :expressionless:

(Janelle) #17

Not that I eat at IHOP, but I never ever would have known this. Do they put it on the menu as a disclosure?

(Lazy, Dirty Keto 😝) #18

Since we’re talking about carbs while eating out, can I ask for some help / suggestions on what to order off of this menu? I am going here for a paint night soon to benefit the village in Greece that gf’s family is from, but most of their dishes have some sweet glaze or rice :expressionless:

I was thinking the PULEHU STEAK with no pineapple drizzle / sweet potatoes, or the KALUA PIG.

(Lazy, Dirty Keto 😝) #19

No they don’t. I ate their with my daughter a month or so ago, posted a pic in the “what did you Keto today?” thread, and that’s how I found out :expressionless:

ETA - if they do disclose it on their menu, it must be in the tiniest writing

Man, that’s tough. Everything is cooked in sugar there - or so it appears. The pig seems about the best. If they do actual cooking on the grill, see if they’ll do anything without the sauce or marinade.
