Hiatus from Coconut oil

Hey yall,

A few weeks into keto now. in my morning BPC, I put 1 Tablespoon of coconut oil. Well, I’ve been having the worst fuckin heartburn of my life. Granted, I am longtime sufferer of this but its been managed without meds for a while. I started by removing everything and adding back morning after morning, as soon as the coconut oil went back in…WHAM, a river of fire in my throat!

Anyone else have this experience? if so, were you able to add it back later, possibly after the gut healed a little?

Thanks for reading

I’ve only had this issue with it when I used it and didn’t realise it was rancid.

Haven’t experienced this myself, but heard about it recently while researching the different tastes/impact of various low glycemic impact sweeteners. About the sweeteners, various people who have tried all of them were saying you have to try a lot of different ones to see which ones work best with your body. Many of the ones who experienced GI upset from sugar-alcohol based sweeteners were saying they also had serious GI upset from MCT oil and coconut oil, but were helped by switching to monk fruit/stevia or short chain vs. medium. Hope you find what works best for you.

@Shortstuff yikes! Mine smells good and tastes good, so I assume its ok?

@eo4wellness thanks for that. I think I will definitely have to do some experimentation. I havent had any issues with stevia or swerve as of yet but man, i could have spit fire on the coconut oil! :fire:

@rhltechie hopefully yours is fine if it smells and tastes ok

Could it be maybe just you’re using too much fat at once?

Coconut oil has decent amounts of the 4 medium chain triglycerides (C6: Caproic, C8: Capric, C10: Caprylic, and C12: Lauric). Caproic acid specifically is associated with irritation of skin and endothelial cells I believe. It could be that you’re experiencing either a sensitivity to a normal amount of caproic acid, or for whatever reason your oil has higher than average amounts of caproic acid (maybe from a idiosyncratic manufacturing technique or something).

I would try two things to test this out if you are inclined: one is try something like Bulletproof MCT (or any pure C8 or C8/C10 blend, the bottle should say, no C6 or C12, see above for common label names) and see if you have any reaction to that, and then the second would be to try coconut oil from a different manufacturer to see if it affects you. If the MCT doesn’t affect you, then it’s probably the C6 in the regular coconut oil, and if you don’t want to shell out for MCT oil regularly, then you may see if different manufacturers affect you differently.

This is very interesting. I was not aware before experiencing it, that it may cause me issues. I do have a very sensitive gut, having heartburn issues before. I do have a collage MCT mix (perfect keto) that is 70% c8 and 30% c10. I havent used it in a few days as I wanted to make sure it wasnt the cause as well. I cannot recall if I have used it without the coconut oil. I will remove the coconut oil for a few days and probably leave out the MCT/collagen for a few days. It sounds like I need to try adding the MCT without the coconut since it does not include a C6. Thank you for the info!

Just an update. I have had almost zero heartburn after removing the coconut oil in my bpc. Which for me is pretty unusual. Thanks for all the info!

Bad thirst but no heartburn from coconut oil and butter.

(Mandy) #10

Hmm… No experience of that. I’ve added the butter and collagen with mct back into my diet with no issues. Odd enough, I can have keto treats later in the day that are made with the same coconut oil with no issue. For some reason mixed into my bpc, first thing in the morning, caused me raging heartburn like I haven’t had in years.

Did you try the whipping cream with the coffee?

for me it is the best. with little cinnamon.

(Mandy) #12

oh yeah. my BPC includes grassfed butter, HWC, cinnamon and collagen/MCT powder. very tasting an filling on days i am not in the mood to cook or eat breakfast. otherwise its just coffee with HWC.

Yes I have the same issue. Especially when I use it to make bulletproof coffee. Butter no problem - I can cook with coconut oil but eating it - lots of heartburn
