by testing my urine using ketosticks - Bayer ones which according to our research are the most reliable
No pee sticks are reliable, they are the worst way to measure as there are too many variables. If you’re dehydrated your urine is more concentrated which makes it look like there’s more ketones than there actually are. They also only measure one type of ketone and only what your body is wasting, which in the early stages is often very high as your body isn’t used to how they work yet. As your body adapts it will regulate production better and waste less (which is generally when pee sticks stop working even if you’re definitely in ketosis.
thank you - these sticks are for use by Drs for Diabetics so its almost impossible to decipher the results in terms of what the information suggests - according to the leaflet I’m heading for all sorts of horrid things including death !!!
Do you suggest sticking with the 20 carbs ? - no need to have an emergency apple?
Are you diabetic? If so, it’s not something I’ve got experience of so I may not be the best person to advise. But, if you’re not, then yes, best to stick with below 20g until adapted but then, if you want to, experiment with higher amounts. I don’t even track anymore but am still happily in ketosis (blood tests).
No, not diabetic. - fantastic thank you - I was reading about Ketoacidosis and worried that at the top of the scale it could be something to be wary of
Thanks so much for your replies
That’s only an issue if you’re type 1 diabetic so you have no need to worry at all. The pee sticks will be a useful tool while you’re first starting out as they will show you that your body is producing ketones which helps you know you’re on the right track, but beyond that, they have no use.
Yeah these aren’t designed to test for nutritional ketosis, they are designed for insulin dependent diabetics to ensure they aren’t getting ketoacidosis. So all literature in the pamphlet will be geared towards that. The best they can tell you is that, yes, you are producing ketones, and you are producing enough that your body has enough to waste them.
The levels on the sticks mean nothing really… think of them only as pos/neg.
Does anyone else feel like we go around and around and around and around about pee sticks? Between this and people complaining about he scale not moving it’s really tiresome.
Hi Rian - I appreciate your frustration but I did mention I am new to this and after doing research and checking the forum I couldn’t find anything to address my particular concern which was less to do with pee sticks and more to do with whether I needed to be concerned about making myself ill (not the outcome I’m looking for obviously) this was my first time to post here - you could have just scrolled down instead of making me feel bad - yes I’m a very sensitive person but so be it
We feel compelled to click because if what you said was true we would be very concerned about you and recommend a potentially life saving trip to the hospital. Sorry if you took offense.
Since I’ve been doing keto on and off for 17 years the urine sticks have always worked well for me, I keep a log of things I’ve eaten and if they stick gets lighter I know what needs to be eliminated from my diet… I consistently have 16mmol/l but that’s my body response, I also drink more water than the recommended so I know I hydrated… Everyones body’s are different and respond differently to unrine strips… As long as it’s a color and your loosing weight your good if your not loosing weight decrease your protein up your fat and watch your sugar intake, try eliminating "fake sugar for 24 hours and see if that scale changes, I am extremely sensitive to all sugar subs so I cannot use them… I’ll still be in ketosis but I won’t loose weight
Thanks for this info. I just started my journey like 10 days or so ago and I have been worried about my ketones being too high and what would happen. I have been using the urine test strips as well. I didnt know about the fake sugar potentially causing issues with certain people so that’s nice too know.
Drink some water ketosticks only tell you hydration effectively. They are not recommended for ketone measurements. Are you diabetic and on meds?
How do you feel, are you about to faint? If not you are probably ok. You can follow 20 net carbs if you really feel you need more carbs for any reason.
Yes, but everyone can’t afford those fancy readers especially if you are on a fixed income. So I get my keto sticks free from my family Dr.
They have been working for me so far so I will continue using them.
