Hey, y'all....just introducing myself

Thank you, @OldDoug. I’m hoping for that as well.

Right now out in public I either use those little motorized carts at the grocery store or I look a little bit like Quasimodo when I’m walking using my hemi walker (I swear to God that thing looks like a step ladder! I want someone handy (heh!) to make me an embroidered bag to hang over the bar in the middle that says “Quasi’s Stepladder” or something on it). I’ve noticed that most people either look away completely or they stare with a kind of horrified look on their face like they are expecting my chest to split open and an alien to come shooting out. It would be a nice change to be “cannot tell.” It really would. That’s why I’m doing all this, to be normal-looking and hopefully completely-abled again.

Good, good thoughts to your dad!

@AllanMisner thank you! I think I’m really going to enjoy myself here!

Hi @cheryl! I promise to! I seem to be combining a whole bunch of different things to make up “Virginia Stroke Recovery Therapy,” lol. In all seriousness, with the way stroke is growing in the US, I think we’ll probably start seeing more stroke patients in these keto and fasting groups in the future. So I’m trying to keep a record of my little n=1 just in case it can help anybody else in the future.

Heh!

@KGB Khara, it really is insane! Shoot me full of insulin and the feed me starch and sugar to “balance” the insulin. Shoot your friend full of glucose drips and then give him drugs to counter the drip. It’s the worst kind of circular thinking and the absolute worst herd mentality. Moo!

I totally agree that for a three day or less hospital stay a patient should be allowed to fast if they choose to. But, of course, that would never happen. Just think of the liability. Any decent lawyer could find a way to successfully sue for peeing on a well-marked electric fence. They sure-as-shootin’ would figure out a way to sue over this. “Health care” is no longer about health in any way, shape, or form. It’s about doing whatever you possibly can to prevent lawsuits. Healthcare, at least in the US, has moved out of the health business and out of the care business and is in the “lawsuit prevention” and the “make as much money as possible no matter what” business. That’s about it.

Yeah, I’ve become a little cynical these days.

I don’t get formal physical therapy anymore. I had some limited at first but now I’m on my own.

I have a vertically-placed grab bar in the bathroom (it’s small - the wall wasn’t wide enough to hang it horizontally) so I hold onto that and do squats and lunges. I seem to “feel it” more when I’m fasting. All that circulating HGH. Woot!

Sometimes I even hum “The Stripper Song” when I’m doing that - the cat watches me then, and sometimes she looks afraid…VERY afraid, lol.

I got an EMS device (electrical muscle stimulator - brains out of the gutter, boys!) that I ordered recently and am starting to use that on my stroke-affected arm and leg.

Other than that I’m just trying to stay as active as possible and not be a slug. Hopefully that strategy will work.

Totally scowling at @Wishbone for politically dookie-ing all over my nice, pretty introducing-me thread. No bacon snacks for you until you clean this mess up and say you’re sorry! :::wagging finger:::

@Aqua_chonk Thanks for the links! I’ve seen That Sugar Film but not the other two. More fun!

slow clap of approval

Virginia - welcome.

  1. I agree with the finger wagging! Amen, Sister - you preach it!!! Most of the time you will find this place to be a source of real encouragement.
  2. Add Dr. Jason Fung and Dr. Adam Nally to those you want to Google, Bing, whatever.
  3. You are an awesome person - may God richly bless you as you recover and continue on.
  4. Reward yourself with several pieces of :bacon::bacon::bacon: !

Correction: He’s kind of an ass online, just found that out the hard way.

Oh yeah, Virginia, I’d sure like a home insulin test. I think I’m a ‘plain vanilla’ case where somebody ate too much and ate a lot of carbohydrates for a long time and eventually became insulin resistant.

It’s odd how Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are lumped together, when there’s quite a divide between the two - Type 1 where there’s not enough insulin, and Type 2 where there’s too much.

(Cheryl) #33

That’s Great! I don’t remember seeing many stories from people recovering from stroke so I think your keto journey will be helpful and inspiring.

#34

Hi @justme Linda, I’m a true Fungster! I discovered his IDM blog when I was in the hospital and tired of watching the 600-lb people shows. Don’t know much (yet) about Nally. Gonna find out more, thanks!

I’m richly blessed already because I’m here with y’all!

Picking up a package of ends and pieces tomorrow (kind friend taking me to The Wally tomorrow - yay! Gots to haz moar bacon!

#35

Wow! What happened? I don’t like rudeness. Completely uncalled for!

(Stickin' with mammoth) #36

You hit the nail on the head. But I’ll show more decorum than he did and just let it go.

#37

In a way, though, you’re really lucky. “Too much” is relatively simple to fix. But I started gaining weight inexplicably when I was FOUR. I just turned 53. So this has been the monster-in-the-closet (that made my pants too small) for me for almost 50 years. Now I know it was a nasty mix of deranged insulin, bad thyroid, really bad food, pica, and bad digestion.
By the way, from reading some of the threads, some of y’all have some really bad digestion that should be fairly straightforward to fix, but keto by itself isn’t going to be able to.

#38

Awww, thanks Cheryl! I’m just afraid the “newness” of it will soon wear off and people will be tired of hearing about it!

#39

Atta girl! It’s never a bad idea to “outclass an ass!!!”

(Stickin' with mammoth) #40

Ha!
