Long ago, like maybe 10 years, I had one when I saw my allergist and he prescribed a cream for me called Denavir. I thought it was great, and used that tube long past its expiration date, until I couldn’t get another millionth of a gram out of it. I looked a minute ago, and GoodRx says the going price (without their coupon) is around $980 for a 5 gram tube.

The last few times I had one, I used plain old, over the counter, Blistex and the difference in length of symptoms between that and the Denavir is probably a few hours. Maybe a day. For a couple of dollars vs. that much (over $800 with their coupon), I’ll stick with Blistex. Acyclovir is more like two or three times the price of Blistex.

Unfortunately not curable, although outbreaks can be treated topically to shorten duration and lessen discomfort. Outbreaks also generally lessen with age. ‘Cold sores’ and ‘genital herpes’ are caused by the same virus: HSV.

After the initial infection, the virus gets into the nerve roots and spreads to the sensory nerve ganglia, the junctions where nerves from different parts of the body come together. For the genital area, the ganglia are adjacent to the spinal cord in the lower back. For orofacial herpes (cold sores), the ganglia are located behind the cheek bone.
