Help required by a student for their dissertation!

EDITED AGAIN!
I realised after I approved this post that it was lost at the end of an existing thread so I have copied and pasted it to this new post.

EDITED Hi Guys. Just a quick edit to let you know that I have talked to @Abirhassan and can vouch for her. There are more details about what she is doing on the survey form. I always think it is nice to help students out and have offered my time before to do so. If you have time, please help Abirhassan out. Thank you. Daisy x

Hello Everybody,

I would really be grateful if you can please take part in my final year project (dissertation). This research project will examine different factors that may contribute to the understanding of eating habits of the population and the relation it has on their wellbeing. A focus will on healthy eating behaviours and attitudes. If you agree to take part and participate please fill in the Survey below It should take less than 15 minutes.

My Survey: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/Abirhassan

Thank you

@Abirhassan

LAST EDIT I PROMISE!
I just took the survey. It takes 10 minutes. It is irritating at times because the answer I wanted wasn’t available. I think @Abirhassan that you are missing a trick on a couple of points.

  1. You do not have the option to answer “better than before” for things like mood improvement.
  2. I feel you need to qualify “healthy” as a term for food choices. I took it to mean what I think of as healthy but it made me uncomfortable.
So some questions felt a little leading or closed. Anyway, I hope you get some surveys from people here and that it helps you with your studies.

Completed.

(Laurie) #3

Completed.

Re the Social Media question: According to my understanding of “social media,” I have zero participation (no Facebook, no Twitter, no Pinterest, etc.). But there was no zero option, so I answered 1-2 hours per day.

If you meant participation in online discussion groups in general (e.g., lifestyle, work-related, or special interest groups such as this one), I spend a lot more than that!

Was going to do the survey when I read this on the intro page.

  1. Why have I been invited to participate?
You have been invited to take part in the study because you either are a student at BPP University or you live and work in the UK, London.

If anyone outside of London & not a student at BPP Uni. participates, won’t that invalidate the survey?

(Carl Keller) #5

Completed.

The questions they ask seem applicable to people regardless of their address and it’s not like they asked our location anywhere in the survey.

#6

I don’t know why it said that but I doubt it is an issue. @Abirhassan can you confirm?

(Abir Hassan ) #7

Hi Everyone,
Thank you very much for completing my survey. The Target population for the Survey is mainly for Individuals living in United Kingdom. I would love to get participants specifally from the London, but it’s not important. Sorry if I didn’t make myself clear and include that in the post. I’m so grateful for those who have already taken part.

Thanks for the reply, I did the survey.

I also took it, US resident here.

I just did your survey. Good luck! Looks like some thought was put into it
 BUT
:sunglasses: lol
I did feel a few times I wanted an answer that wasn’t available. Most I was able to just skip. But a couple required answers. The social media ones were the only ones I think.

Keto Vitae!

(Hyperbole- best thing in the universe!) #11

I just completed the survey. I’m happy to help
but I had a problem with many of the questions. As noted by others “healthy” and “social media” are not well defined.

This question I couldn’t even parse: Do you think that on the market there is also unhealthy food?

What is “dieting behavior”?

“I have saved up so many things that they get in the way.” One of the answer choices is “a moderate amount”. What?

Actually, I almost regret participating. I don’t see how much valuable information can be gleaned from the survey as it is written.

After typing this out I had a good think before hitting reply, I don’t want to be overly critical or discouraging. But I think I just had first hand experience with the limits of an epidemiological study.

I agree. A lot of the wording needs to be changed. I think the results will have a skew on them. Now if this is actually addressed in the dissertation that is fine. Actually, because this is part of her education and not a professional study to be published then adding such insight would maybe even get more marks! Depending on the time frame you could also redo the survey to improve it @Abirhassan and remove the bias that exists now. If it stays as is then you really do need to make a note in your dissertation of what you have learnt from the process and how your results are going to be skewed because of the wording of the survey.

I could tell what answers you were looking for from the questions and that isn’t a good thing because it shows that some of them were leading and/or closed.

Hopefully, this has been useful experience for you. Like @Ruina says, we are not trying to pull you down with our criticisms but rather help you get a better overall result.

Hi Everyone,

Thank you all for participating and giving your thoughtful feedback. The demographic questionnaire that has the information about ‘social media’ and ‘healthy’ were approved by my tutor. I am happy to be getting this feedback because when I was planning my dissertation I never received such feedback from my dissertation tutor. Also, some of the measures that state ‘I have saved up so many things that they get in the way’, ‘what is dieting behaviour’, ‘do you think that on the market there is also unhealthy food’ and some of the questions that seem closed are questionnaire measures that have been published and I understand they have their criticism, especially in terms of validity. I will take all your thoughtful feedback and include it in my dissertation and also discuss it with my tutor. Thank you.

Wow! I am surprised by that and a little saddened. Your tutor should know better!

I will give you an example. I ticked most of the compulsive behaviour boxes. I ticked the keto box for diet I am following (I would prefer WOE as I don’t regard it as a “diet” in the meaning it has come to take) and I also ticked the healthy eating improves mood etc. boxes. Now, you could draw the conclusion from that that I am somewhere on the orthorexia spectrum which funnily enough is what your survey is gauging. The information you have failed to glean though is that my compulsive behaviour is significantly improved since eating low carb and keto. I know that this is a healthy way to eat for me because my mood, migraines, general health and energy improvements tell me so. I don’t eat this way because I am following a fad and it doesn’t stop me from doing anything. In fact, it has enriched my life incredibly and changed it so much for the better. I am working towards making a full time job of my passion - how many people can say that? That would not have come about had I not entered the keto community. I wasn’t able to put any of that across in your survey and the fact that I might add to statistics that equate keto with orthorexia pisses me off.

So yes, please do convey that to your tutor

(Abir Hassan ) #15

Hi Daisy,

Thank you for the reply. Yes, this is why I have asked if anyone is willing to put down their email address. So I can interview them about their eating behaviours and habits in more depth. :slightly_smiling_face:

#16

Yep. I did that

(Dolly) #17

I did that. Switzerland on board

(Consensus is Politics) #18

I beleive I did so as well. If I didn’t, send me a private message and I’ll give you my email and give you all the data you need.

Looks like you joined, posted this and and haven’t posted anything else since then.
Any update on your survey?
