Help? Ordering in Japanese restaurant

(Christopher Avery) #1

I’ve been strict keto for 4 months. I like cooking so I mostly eat at home. When I travel for work I’m mostly by myself or have a say where we go. Well, I am visiting Melbourne, Australia for business and have been invited to a Japanese restaurant next week (http://www.ichini.com.au/menu/). Pre-keto my typical Japanese fare would be Miso soup, edamame, sushi and rolls. Obviously sushi and rolls are out. I realize I can do Sashimi. I can also look at meat or prawn dishes and try to discern what’s in the sauces.

Any guidance?

Chicken wings, crab salad, sashimi. The filet (with sauce on side).

I’d stick to sashimi to play it safe on the naughty mystery sauces. Then, bring purse butter/coconut oil.

Hmmm. Purse butter. I’m gonna have to get myself a man purse. And butter. And a container for the butter.

Believe it or not, Trader Joe’s sells little single packets of coconut oil now. You could probably fine individually wrapped pats of butter, too, but I’m not sure how to keep either one from becoming slimy modern art in your purse or pocket.

Reminds me of my dad. He took the half full sachet of maple syrup with him after a McDonald’s breakfast. It was in his coat pocket safely until he sat on it in the car…

Be safe with that butter lol

I’m Japanese-American. Japanese, Thai or Chinese restaurants just mean it’s my once in a great while non-Keto meal.

Miso soup might be ok. I don’t know of any homecooks putting sugar in the soup. Can’t speak for restaurants.

Stick with sashimi. If you must stay Keto.

Grilled fish might be ok. Especially if it’s the whole fish and not a filet. Filets will be coated in a glaze.

ALL the sauces, marinades & dressings have some sugar in them and probably MSG, and the soy sauce is usually made with wheat & soy.

I always ask for no rice or carrots and add extra meat and extra vegetables minus the carrots. I stray from sauce unless it’s the spicy ones.

I love Egg Fu Yung, with the sauce on the side so I can test it first.

Check out negimaki. Little thin beef strips rolled with scallions. YUM!

Thank you for all the contributions. This really helps me to categorize, rule in and rule out, and make sense of ordering.

Okay. Here’s the report. I had a vodka martini, we shared small plates of edamame and grilled prawns with spicy mayo. Then I had a bunch of sashimi.

Easy pesy.
