Help Needed!

I was on the Keto diet for most of 2016. I never did adapt and stop having stomach distress. I added veggies to add fiber. I tried digestive enzymes and probiotics. I even tried psylium husk powder, but it is nasty. I went off the diet last fall and have really recently restarted. The stomach issues came back immediately. Anyone have the same thing and resolved it.Thanks

What sort of stomach distress are we talking about? Did you see any improvement in other areas while you were eating keto?

(eat more) #3

stomach distress like no poop? (i’m assuming since you mentioned fiber and psyllium husk)
what kinds of foods were you eating? dairy?

(Dusty Satterlee) #4

Diarrhea.

I did lose weight, less headaches.

Fiber is not going to fix anything. Its a myth. What are you eating?

How much water are you drinking?

People tend to get constipated on keto so to go in the other direction (pardon the pun) is unusual. But since ketoers use oils and fats to treat constipation, it could be that these foods are too potent a medicine in your case.

So, you could adopt the keto diet gradually by starting with lean meats and less fat, then increase fat gradually until you find your limit. You may just naturally have a lower tolerance for it, everybody’s different. You can invent your own keto plan. As long as you’re seeing the benefits you want, it’s all good. Whatever amount of carb cutting you can manage will help your body out.

Another approach is the two week test cycle. If you suspect a single food of being the culprit, you can go off of it completely for two weeks, then eat a moderate amount of it and see what happens. Because you can only do this with one food at a time, you’d have to postpone eating keto until your investigation is completed.

My toilet disagrees.

I’m thinking too much fat too fast. I know when people start using coconut oil they have to start SLOWLY or they end up in the bathroom all day. So I’m thinking @Aqua_chonk is right and maybe start off with a little less and gradually increase and see if that helps.

What are the typical foods you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Do you take supplements or other stuff like MCT oil to enhance keto?

(Dusty Satterlee) #11

Here is a pretty typical day…

Wake up make tea with stevia, butter, heavy cream, and coconut oil.

I take NOW digest ultra digestive enzymes after most meals.

Side note (I think) I am using Pruvit Keto/OS. I have stopped using it at times to rule it out as a factor. It seems to make no difference. I usually add it to the tea in the morning 1/2 scoop. Even though a full one is actual dose.

90 percent of the time I do an almond milk (8oz), Kiefer Lifeway probiotic (4oz), and PB2 (2 TBPS) makeshift smoothie.

About 90 oz’s of water thoughout the day.

Lunch - usually something like a cheeseburger with no bun.

Dinner - usually something like a burger with no bun, steak, or chicken. Maybe a little bit of corn, broccoli, or spinach.

I did try replacing lunch burger with spinach, homemade lo carb, ranch, bacon, salad. That made little to no difference in the trips to the toilet.

Maybe I am doing something wrong?

have you tested eliminating the enzymes?

(Dusty Satterlee) #13

The issues where happening before I added the enzymes. I added them in an attempt to eliminate the issue.

Vegetables are what give me the runs.

Factor out the probiotic first, not everybody’s colon enjoys those things, and you may not need it. Then consider omitting all the fat first thing in the morning or, at the very least, eating it with other food. Grease on an empty stomach is like a gastrointestinal Slip N Slide for many.

Also, that’s a lot of water. Are you actually that thirsty or are you trying to hit some number?

(Dusty Satterlee) #16

Thanks for all the advice. I am going to cut out the the coconut oil, butter, and cream in the morning to start and see how that works.

I drink the 90oz of water because what I read is that you should consume at least 1/2 your body weight in oz of water.

I don’t know but my rule of thumb has always been to just drink when thirsty, or at least until urine is clear, which I think indicates adequate hydration.

#18

The articles and books I’ve read where they discuss feeling thirsty usually claim that by the time you “feel” thirsty, you’re already slightly dehydrated in order for that signal to be triggered. There’s also the claim that many people misinterpret thirst for hunger and end up eating when they should be drinking.

That being said, when urine is clear as @stacy says, it’s usually a good sign of adequate hydration since it will get darker as dehydration increases.

Did you try to reduce fiber?
