Help needed ketone level high

(James) #1

Hi

I’ve started keto on the 2nd of May and have just done a urine test images attached, is this normal for 7 days of keto? And should I worry about the high Keto reading? As far as I know I do not have diabetes and was reading anything above 3.0 mmol should seek medical attention

The pee tests are not reliable. They will initially show very high levels. After a few weeks, that could show no ketones even though you are in ketosis.

I’ve order a blood test but tested the strips on my son and wife and they showed negative so they seemed to be correct, so you reckon I have nothing to worry about

Nothing to worry about. You’re just wasting a lot of ketones, mostly acetoacetate. Over time synthesis of ketones will synch better with utilization and you will pee out less. Are your wife and son eating keto? Or just using them as a ‘control’?

I did read that when you first go in to ketosis your body chucks a lot out due to not using it, the wife and son are not on ketosis but just tested on them to see if these strips was what they said they were.

Thanks for the advise and the link much appreciated

Ketone levels in the urine are greatly affected by your level of hydration. If you drink more water and test again in an hour or so they’ll be lower. With blood testing ketones change by the minute. You could be sitting and reading the newspaper for two hours, test and get a decent level. Get up and take out the trash and test again for lower ketones. I’ve never spent the cash getting testing gear, I just trust the process. Keep your carbs very low and you’re in ketosis, simple.:cowboy_hat_face:

Waaaay back when I first started keto I had the same experience. Found out it’s no big deal. The only people who have to worry are type 1 diabetics.

Until your body adjusts and becomes fat adapted it will waste a LOT of ketones in urine and breath. But as your body adapts to your new way of eating you will only find traces of ketones in your urine most of the time, if any since it will use them.

Thanks everyone for the advice I’ve taken it all on board and I’m going to go by the scales not the test from now on

Be aware that the scales aren’t always the best indicator, either. Sometimes you’ll lose inches, sometimes your body is just putting all its effort into healing, not weight/fat loss.

To be honest it’s only been a week and I feel energetic happy and overall better in myself I did use keto a few years back and lost about 45lb I’m 6 months for a holiday but came home and back to old habits but this time even though it’s been a week the feeling is completely different with mood and end levels

Just hope it stay like this
