Help Me Stay Keto in Haiti?

I started keto in October of last year after my doc said I had JT2D. My A1c was 8.7 and my glucose level was 200, and that was after the more serious event that led me to the ER a week or so earlier.

After a few months of keto my A1c is at 5.0, my glucose is fine, I’ve dropped 60 pounds, and lost about 10 inches off my waist!

Here’s my dilemma. I travel to Haiti each summer to teach at a music camp. This summer I’ll be down there for 9 days. The Haitian staff provides meals, usually consisting of rice, pasta, beans. Meat is at premium, vegetables are sparse with some lettuce and tomatoes, and potatoes. There’s no refrigeration available, and electricity is hit & miss. Given the extreme heat (100-ish with high humidity), and the long days of teaching and rehearsals, I need to be careful to drink lots of liquid, keep my electrolytes up, and keep something in me food-wise.

What can I do to keep keto? I can bring some food stuff with me, but of course weight becomes somewhat of an issue. Macademia notes, sardines, Keto bars (although I’m sure they’d become melted globs)?

I’m looking for the hive mind to hep provide some answers!
Thanks!

Keith

Congrats on your success, and how great that you teach in Haiti every summer!

Macadamia nuts and beef jerky are my staples while traveling, and you can also get MCT powder (I would try that first since not everyone loves it). If you still have weight to lose, you could essentially do a modified fat fast with MCT in coffee/tea plus occasional jerky, sardines and nuts.
The MCT containers are bulky but light.

If you do a search for “travel” I think you’ll find lots of other food ideas.

Good luck!

There are two ways to “be keto”. Via WHAT we eat, or via WHEN we eat. Both methods are effective. If you controlling one is problematic, then use the other.

If you’re fairly metabolically heathy, eating OMAD even if it’s rice & beans, should keep you in ketosis (assuming you’re normally in ketosis). If you’re less metabolically flexible, using alternate day fasting may be sufficient compensation for eating beyond personal carb tolerance, allowing preservation ketotic state.

Jerky. Pack as much as you can.

And with that heat and water loss, jerky and hydration will replace both salt and water. Though it is hard to find jerky without sugars.
