HELP! Liver & Thyroid

#1

Hi All, it’s great to be able to join this community.

After struggling with obesity through all my life, I see KETO as my last attempt before gastric bypass surgery. I started nearly a month ago and I feel great. I’ve lost 25lbs, I don’t get hungry, I even feel more energized and clear-headed (while fasting predominantly). But for the past week, I have felt tired and I’ve only lost 1 lb. I’m keeping my net carbs under 20 grams and my fat intake over 75g and under 80g.

Before KETO, I was diagnosed with Steatosis Grade 3 (Fatty liver). My liver is very enlarged, but enzymes were ‘ok’. My thyroid was low but within the parameters. I had a blood test done on Saturday after a 16 hour fast and the results scared me.

Thyroid results:

(TSH 3):

Before Keto 0.588 (Normal range 0.400-4,000)

After 0.347 (Normal range 0.400-4,000)

I know it was low before, but that’s a big drop and now under normal range and into Hypothyroidism.

I don’t have before for T4, but it’s at 8.7 (Normal range 4.7-11.40)

T3 Uptake after Keto:

35.08 (Normal range 24-40)

Liver enzymes:

BUN 10.0 (15.0 BEFORE) + 5

AST 35.0 (30.0 BEFORE) + 5

ALT 56.0 (47 BEFORE) + 9

Was it a mistake to get into Keto? I would really feel terrible if I would have to go back. I really felt this was the correct way to finally lose weight.

Any help or advice is immensely appreciated.

Thank you,

JP.

Hi, first, TSH is an indirect marker for thyroid function. T3 and T4 are more reliable as they are the true hormones. So if your T3 and T4 are okay, then your thyroid is doing okay. And for the record, a low TSH means HYPERthyroidism. Which you don’t have anyway.

And about liver enzymes, they vary constantly, depending on many factors. As long as they are not in the hundreds, I would not worry about it. There is no goal to reach with liver enzymes. Low or high does not matter as long as it stays in the healthy range.

Hope it helped!

Bottom line, you are fine
