Help finding low carb/keto doctors in South Africa

Hi All,

I am in Australia & have had good success with a keto diet for myself.

I have a friend whose mum lives in Port Elizabeth South Africa. She has pretty nasty type 2 diabetes, takes insulin injections, has lost an eye because of diabetic complications, etc.

My friend would like to try & help his mum regain some quality of life & hopefully reverse some of her symptoms but feels that she would only change her lifestyle if instructions came from an authourity figure like a doctor.

Is there anyone out there that might have the details of any doctors in South Africa that are on board with low carb/keto that we might be able to refer my friend’s mum to?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I thought there was a pretty huge Banting community in SA… it being the home of Prof Tim Noakes?
Maybe get in touch with the Noakes Foundation and see if they have a list of Low Carb doctors?

Thanks Mark. I did send an email to Prof Noakes as well. I don’t know if he will have time to answer but hopefully.

He was so famous that I think any Google search I did with doctor, low carb or keto in the search pretty only returned information about him.

I did tell my mate about the Banting community too in case it managed to help his mum.

I was pretty familiar with Prof Noakes having seen him on the Aussie science show Catalyst, (before food politics shut it down), the lowcarb down under Youtube channel & having followed the news of his court case.

I’ve also started to get a bit interested in surski paddling & years after the fact found that an absolute legend of the sport, (Oscar Chalupsky) who won a world championship at Molokai at the age of 49 had been consulting with Prof Noakes & gone on a ketogenic diet fo approx 12 months prior.

Funny how there can be odd synchronicity some times.

My son plays a bit of amateur tennis & I predicted that Novak Djokovic would win the Australian Open if he made the final seeing as he is on a keto diet. My rationale was that keto really helps with endurance sports & the after a lot of match play, the endurance benefits of keto would be more advantageous than they might have been in the early rounds. Bold prediction but one that makes the old man look like a bit of a soothsayer!

Thanks again for the help. Hopefully there are some helpful locals in SA out there that know of some good doctors.
