Hi! Looking for some quick advice. We just arrived at my husband’s family’s house for dinner where I discovered that the meal is pulled BBQ chicken. Yum! But I also learned that the BBQ sauce in the crockpot right now includes about a cup Sweet Baby Ray’s which has a ton of sugar and carbs in it. I’m wondering if I eat the meat with as little of the sauce as possible if that’s enough to avoid some of those carbs?
Help - Eating someone else’s cooking
Unless the meat is separate from the sauce, I don’t see how it’s possible to eat the meat with “as little sauce as possible.” What do they have for sides? I’d probably just eat a small amount of the meat and not stress, and opt for low carb sides if they have any.
My wife made vegetable lasagne which had sauce from a jar. First time I had it I was fine.
A few weeks later she made it again and this time I didn’t hold back, “I was fine last time”. Well it knocked me out of keto for 3 days.
So it comes down to home much we have. As Beccs said, have as little as possible and focus on the sides…
Well it is meat, enjoy in moderation. These things will happen, at least its not pasta.
I’ve eaten sweet baby ray a few times since being keto. It’s not the end of the world
I ate some honey-glazed ham a few months ago that left me with a mildly upset stomach. I tried to wipe off the reddish glaze but the sweet flavor permeated the ham pretty well. I suspect there was some type of artificial sweetener involved since it didn’t taste much like honey, nor did it taste very good.
The thing to remember is that this is a WOL.
For me, I want to enjoy social occasions as much as possible and cause as little offence to my friends and family whilst still maintaining my WOE.
In the beginning I dreaded social occasions and spent many a tense evening scared in case I inadvertently ate a carb or two! If and when I did, I found that the world didnt cave in! I just got straight back too it the next day.
Over time my friends and family have come to understand how I live and tend to ensure there are food choices for me.
Do your best. Take a little of what you shouldnt eat , take a lot of what you can eat and then leave most of what you shouldn’t eat! Most people are too busy looking at their own plate to notice what’s happening on yours.
The most important thing is to relax and enjoy the occasion. And enjoy your life to the full.
