Hello folks

(Scott) #1

Hi,

I came here to get away from the constant bashing of keto and LC/HF at MFP. It seemed that every time someone would start a thread about keto their were about six people that would always chime in and act interested asking “why keto?” after the poster answered it would quickly move to “you don’t need keto to do that” “CICO is all you need” “eat less move more”. All I had do to is mention Dr. Fung or Taubes name to cause a nasty response. It seems much more friendly here. I started Keto LC/HF on July 10th and have been very happy with this way of eating. I use keto LC/HF as the description of how I eat because I tend to drift between the two. If I give up my scotch and wine I would be full keto for sure.

Welcome to the forum, it is a very friendly place for ketonians!

Welcome, Scott. :slightly_smiling_face:

Well, that definitely doesn’t do the job for everybody. Fung and Taubes won’t get you much ire here.

I’m guessing that a lot of people at MFP aren’t obese or don’t have insulin resistance and other hormonal challenges, or that they just don’t realize that going very low-carbohydrate is the way to address these issues for many of us.

Welcome great bunch of people here.

Welcome! Hope you find this forum as useful as I have. Yes, the forum is very supportive. We have many members who are very well informed about Keto and LC/HF.

If you are so inclined, can you share with us any health benefits you have received from your Keto LC/HF WOE?

Hello and welcome Scott.

Keto threatens people’s lifestyles and food choices and way too many have the flock mentality due to inaccurate propaganda preached by medical organizations that say “Fat causes fat, eat less move more, salt is bad” etc. People who don’t want to give up cake and fried chicken are not willing to do the research and look up the studies that prove they’ve been lied to for their entire lives. People here are living proof that LCHF not only works, it’s a positive lifechanger. The proof is in (not eating) the pudding.

I refuse to get into arguements with carb zombies. Refined sugar is likely the most addictive substance on the planet and you can’t argue successfully with addicts. I would just post stuff like this and tell them read this if you dare:

Welcome. You won’t get any of that crap here, we are a friendly and supportive bunch

Health benefits? Let me start with the benefits I have since going LC/HF are not because of that way of eating it is only because of calorie deficit and resulting weight loss. Lord was I tired of hearing that!

I was a bit worried that a high fat diet would lead to high cholesterol. After three months in I had my blood work done and it came back great. My HDL was 91, LDL was down. I have lost 25 pounds and feel terrific. My running wasn’t going well until I hit about three and a half months and suddenly I had my energy back. I assume that I had finally become fat adapted at that time. All of this is without counting or limiting calories. I eat when hungry (only at meal times) and stop when full, that’s it. This is the easiest “Diet” I have ever done.

Holy Moley, you weren’t kidding about the MFP forums! I use the MFP app to track my weight and have used it before when calorie counting but never ventured into the forums. The misinformation and misunderstanding about what keto IS in the threads I skimmed was horrifying. What I never saw anyone address (and maybe they did at some point) was how calorie reduction reduces the CO part of CICO to the point that it’s unsustainable. Unlike calorie counting, you aren’t tanking your metabolism and you are getting satiated so you don’t binge like you do on a HC diet.

You may not have been asking me directly, but you made me think, what’s the most important health benefit I got out of this WOE.

The answer is easily: I am not afraid of the future any more.

In the past few years, prior to keto, every single day I was working was a physical trial full of inflammation and dread. I would keep thinking to myself: If I feel like utter
shit
at age 48, there’s no way I want to be alive after age 60.

Simply getting that dietary induced inflammation out of my body has given me a whole new positive attitude and the future doesn’t seem to scare me (as much) any more.

I learnt long ago not to hang out on Facebook and discuss Keto with anyone lol

(Scott) #12

I always had to hide this on MFP but I feel that there is a significant aspect of depriving cancer of glycogen. Yes maybe not proven but give me a slim chance with no side effects and I will take it.

I was amazed that, after the first week, I didn’t have to spend the first 30 minutes in the morning shuffling around while the joints loosened up. I can remember hobbling to the phone when it rang early in the morning, sort of rolling out of bed, etc. Now, I don’t even think about it in the morning…so it’s the absence of discomfort that’s big. But since it’s an absence, it’s easy to forget what it felt like.

MFP is a crap app, so I’m not surprised the forums are likewise

(Scott) #15

MFP also banned me for pointing out that some people on MFP will follow any keto related thread and gang up on any pro keto poster that is in conflict with view of CICO or a calorie is a calorie. That group often caused any keto thread to be closed after they decended on it.
