Oh I’m from India… And half my country is fighting over beef (read religious fundamentalism).
Hell Just Froze Over
Yes, it’s so strange. Or maybe I should say holy cow! I mean I love bacon, I love red meat and I don’t get any where I live. It becomes particularly hard following half the recipes (I don’t get avocados here either. They’re like expensive super exotic fruits you only get to see at the chic patisserie or the “out of your budget” shelf at the mall. P.s. we don’t have malls here. It’s native to the cities.)
So I’m going simple keto. Whole, local food cooked humbly. No more those psyllium husk pasta! Nope.
Next time you’re in town you may want to pick up a probiotic, and/or grab the ingredients to lacto-ferment some veggies. That’s one shotgun method of providing good gut flora. There’s a whole 'nother world in there and it needs to be populated for so many systems of your body to work at peak efficiency.
I know what you mean about OMAD snowballing if you break it. Just remember that it’s not a keto rule. It’s just that we know that keto works even better if there is some, any, kind of fasting implemented alongside it.
The one thing that sticks out is the broth. If there’s protein in it from the chicken bone/muscle/cartilage, then that’ll signal mTOR to stop autophagy and you will delay the benefits of fasting, if that’s what you’re going for.
Ohho…then I should be careful with the broth. I usually simply fry my chicken skin and pieces and add water and boil. I drain that and dilute with water. That’s what I drink maybe once a day if I’m overtly hungry.
I do take multivitamin, calcium, cod liver oil and probiotic.
We really don’t know what will stop autophagy. If that is a person’s primary reason for fasting, he or she should consume only water.
" When mTOR goes up, it shuts down autophagy. mTOR is exquisitely sensitive to dietary amino acids (protein)."

I agree, although if you’re fasting and still being active, you’ll want to replace salt and water that you sweat.
Fung also cites another signal for autophagy that we don’t even know if coffee will turn off
I understand, as coffee has a bazillion different compounds in it.
But I was just reading some more sites on broth and figure if we know that mTOR is a nutrient sensor that picks up on protein, and broths, if made with bone and joint, provide proteins, that’s it’s a pretty safe bet that mTOR will say, hey we got some food to play with now.

Now is mTOR’s decision to turn off autophagy dose dependent? If yes, then can we hope a cup of it isn’t enough to wreck a fast? I think that’s the question we should be asking. But I bet it’s not. I bet there’s a flurry of signalling that goes on just as soon as that first sip touches your mouth.
Thanks so much
…read Fung’s article. Gosh, it was illuminating.
I’ve decided to eat when I’m terriblly hungry, have headache and feeling unhappy: I’m going to eat till I’m full. Then I’ll eat again if necessary but won’t limit my first meal just because I look forward to lunch. If my brunch fills me up, so be it.
Exactly! The hardest part of learning how to fast is to deprogram the whole ‘3 square meals a day (plus snacks now)’ coupled with a certain time of day and night). Once you learn to eat only when hungry you will heal and slim down to your genetically programmed weight, or Phinney weight and composition.
We can all help you with recipes… But give us the backstory because what your doctors is telling you do does seems like serious broad-strokes and doesn’t really make sense. Were you having issues with dairy? Did you have a sensitivity test done? If so, what were the results and what did they test you for (specifically). On the “anything sweet” thing, that just doesn’t make sense AT ALL!
Here’s the sad reality, many of us “lay people” and our “anecdotal” knowledge know a hell of a lot more than most Doctor’s when it comes to nutrition. The more you can tell us the better advise we can give.
Hey thanks so much for reaching out. Actually, my physician had been in our family for a very long time. We have a family history of becoming lactose intolerant over the years. It’s from my mother’s side. I’ve become intolerant to ghee, I have massive digestive issues. It has been suggested just for month or two to cut out dairy and see if that helps with my irritation.
“All sweets” is because erythritol might be causing the bloating as well. Some people have difficulty digesting erythritol as well. I still do stevia. But most of the desserts which I prefer or make are made with erythritol because it gives a sugar like texture and it has the exact same consistency unlike liquid stevia drops. Cutting out erythritol would mean cutting all that out as well.
