Heart palpitations on carnivore/Keto

#1

I’ve been on carnivore and some Keto but mainly carnivore diet for about a month or so and lately I’ve been having heart palpitations and it’s been getting really bothersome. Any one ever had this or know what could be causing this or possibly the remedy for it? I am not anxious so it’s not related to anything like that…Thanks

Are you getting enough sodium, potassium, and magnesium? Sodium is the easiest to manage, and we need 10-15 g of table salt (NaCl) a day for optimum health (this amount includes salt already in food). With sodium at the proper level, potassium and magnesium often take care of themselves, so start by working on keeping your salt intake up, and then decide whether to supplement the other two.

Don’t overlook the trace mineral selenium. It helps regulate heart rhythm. It can be found in Brazil nuts or as a supplement. I take the supplement and it helped my hard heart beats rather quickly.

My cardiologist says trace minerals are often overlooked by nutritionist in the grand scheme.

Since you are still doing carnivore @Lbomb I would say, Potassium has a great effect in calming and regulating the heart. It slows it down ( they use it to stop the heart completely for lethal injection so careful!). Salmon is a good source for some potassium but not adequate as your only source. Unfortunately potassium is pretty much supplied by fruits and vegetables so if you’re still doing carnivore you’ll likely need to supplement somehow. You could add 1/2 teaspoon of lite salt to your diet.

I did have considerable elevation in the heart pulse rate in the begging of keto.

it persisted for almost 2 weeks then disappeared.

I do not know why it came and what made it go.

that is why I think it is a transitional thing.

@Alpha I have had unexplained episodes of them for years, I usually just sit down and take it easy till it passes. I was on dialysis for years and my kidneys didn’t regulate potassium so I had to avoid it dietarily. At one point the doctor wanted me to supplement it because I was low! I said “no thanks I’ll just enjoy the tomatoes and avocados that I have been avoiding”. They always start off with the drugs! :cowboy_hat_face:

I’ve been Carnivore going on 3 months, and I had heart palpitations in the beginning. Originally I was supplementing with an electrolyte supplement and decided to give that up, apparently too much potassium can cause heart palpitations and I was also on Spirolactone which is a potassium-sparing diuretic which I’ve now weaned off. The only supplement I take now is fish oil.
I also cut back on my caffeine, I went from drinking 3 cups of coffee/tea to just one cup in the morning. I noticed the feelings were worst after a cup of coffee/tea, unfortunately they would also occur if I drank decaf so I couldn’t use that as a substitute.
Since making these changes I have not had problems. I hope this helps.
