HCT/ Hb levels low

(jilliangordona) #1

Hi all,

I started back up with measuring my blood glucose since shifting from keto to higher carb paleo, and my HRT and Hb levels have been coming up lower than the normal rage at 34% and 11.5 g/dL respectively.

Are these numbers ACTUALLY low? I have a follow up doc appointment in a few days and will bring it up. The numbers were on the low end of the range but within normal last time I checked a few weeks ago.

How many tests have you done?

I’ve been tracking the HCT and Hb values displayed by my keto mojo in a spreadsheet. The average over 197 entries is 41.0 and 13.9 with standard deviations of 4.62 and 1.6. The lowest recorded values (which I think are highly suspect) are 23 and 7.8. My average of 41 for hemacrit is slightly below the range which is considered to be average for adult males.

If you haven’t seen it yet, take a look at the keto mojo FAQ for this topic. It says: “…we have found that the HCT fluctuates and moves around a lot depending on many factors which causes confusion for some.”

I recently purchased a keto mojo. I’ve been keto for quite some time and according to the keto mojo my ketones and bs are pretty good. However, my HCT & hb are consistently low. First I’m wondering if the measurement are accurate and second if a low reading is to be expected when keto…

I don’t think you should rely on the keto mojo for accurate HCT and Hb results. As I understand it, it uses HCT to help with accuracy in measuring blood glucose levels.

Most of my recent HCT readings have been within the normal range for adult males. However, looking over my last 20 or so readings, I see two readings where I got 39, one where I got 36, and another where I got 41, all of which are below the normal range for adult males. My highest reading in that same time period was 50.

The lowest value that I’ve (ever) recorded is 23 and the highest is 53. That’s over 237 readings. The median value is 42, which is right at the bottom of the normal range. Standard deviation is 4.54.

That median value of 42 tells you that nearly half of the HCT readings that I’ve gotten when measuring blood glucose are outside (lower) than the normal range for adult males.

Thanks! That makes sense. I dug a bit also after posting and found exactly what you’ve pointed out! The Keto Mojo is licensed for blood glucose and ketones, not for HCT and hb. Their own website advises disregarding the results. Their engineers use those numbers for improved accuracy of blood glucose and they decided since they had them to display them. It seems they regret that decision now because the results cause consternation among their customers due to inaccuracy of the displayed values… Oops!

Thanks y’all!
