Hey everybody I’m having a problem with keto started doing it 5 months ago and in first few days I was showing
Keto signs even on the strips I was getting good readings, but I fell off it and landed back at my old habits but I decided after xmas I was gonna take it serious and go at it again as a life change me and a friend started it he got In to Ketosis straight away nearly but I’m struggling and I’m a little confused I don’t know what I’m doing wrong does your food have to be organic? Or am I taking abit longer then before can you eat too much fat or would it be the fact theirs traces of sugar in some of my meals I had a keto coffee this morning and usually 2 egg 3 slices of bacon I get my lunch out of Tesco so it can vary looking for some really good advice thanks
Having trouble with keto
Hi,
Absolutely not, organic / grass fed does not make any difference to keto levels.
Are your Keto strips old? I had a problem after Christmas where I’d stored them in the bathroom and they somehow got damp and no longer worked, had to throw them away.
Suggest you plug all your food into an online macro calculator like www.fatsecret.co.uk, will easily highlight if you are eating the incorrect food and it has UK brands. You can also config the website to show net carbs and save yourself lots of trouble.
When I first started keto back in June 17 I was in ketosis on the sticks within a day or 2, but now I have been keto for a while and have a rare cheat day like Christmas day, I have noticed it can take me up to 7-10 days to start registering ketones on the sticks. I believe this is because the sticks only measure the ketones that spill over and are flushed out by the body. When I first started the diet my body was not used to using ketones so lots of leftovers that were flushed out but once I was used to using ketones as a fuel my body swapped quicker and used up those small amounts of Ketones.
If you are eating less than 20g of carbs a day, protein in moderation and made sure there are no hidden carbs in your food then you’ll be producing ketones after a few days, they will just be getting used up quicker than in the past.
I’d advise that you stop doing that.
The more you eat out, the less control you have of your diet/carb intake.
Keto diet is low carb, moderate protein, fat to satiety (eat it until you are full and don’t crave anything else).
When you eat out, you have little/no idea of the ratios you are consuming. Even eating a salad with “olive oil” in a restaurant is fraught with peril because most places use an oil mix or a seed/veggie oil and 99% of it’s junk. Some of us actually carry our own oil and vinegar if we are eating out, that way we can control as many variables as possible.
Don’t have time to make lunch and take with you? Really? Have time to cook up an extra package of bacon, boil a dozen eggs, and portion up some nuts, maybe olives? Have a “bento box” of a couple boiled eggs, several slices of bacon, a few nuts, a few olives and pour good quality olive oil over the top of all that, a small tupperware container doesn’t take up much room and I’ve even left it un-cooled for most of the day without issue. If you want to step it up a notch, add a slice of cheese, some porkrinds, maybe even a piece of broccoli or two for variety, it’s really simple stuff, costs very little, and travels well. We’ve even sat down at a bar, ordered some chicken wings (without sauce of course) and pulled out a box like I describe, and ate it right in front of the server, they never say a word.
Best of luck to you, it gets easier, you’ll find your desire for variety is likely to go down once you get the carbs out of your diet. Organic and all that other stuff is NOT required, it’s “next level” stuff, getting the sugar and carbs out, the fat in and moderating protein, that’s the base of the diet, and where you will want to focus your efforts when starting out.
Congrats on changing your life!
EDIT:
Not sure what you are eating at tesco but many of the packaged meals/preserved meats have hidden sugars or preservatives that may not be good for us. When it comes to sugar, it’s often hidden with names like dextrose, dried cane juice, etc, they use all kinds of names to hide it.
One very good thing, the tesco website is excellent for a grocery store, you can look up items and it shows you the nutritional values, if you continue to eat from there, it might help to spend some time planning your meals using the site, so you know what you are consuming in advance or at least after your meals.
