Have we got it wrong about ratios of fat for weight loss?

They are trying to convince us by repetition, boys. Not sure it’s working.:rofl::crazy_face:

I love the Leptin test suggested by one of the posters to that article.

’ Mirror test. Walk up to a mirror. If your belly hits before your nose, leptin resistant.’

I’ve been interested in this thought since the beginning( a little over 3 months in here). My first few weeks I sought out fat, tons of it but came across the same info from Virta. While I didn’t give it a ton of thought at the time, this level of fat/protein intake kind of naturally happened to me. My fat fell down a bit, protein went up a bit. I’ve looked at my last month and I rarely go over 800 calories worth of fat (I’m fairly close to the woman in the graph). My macros are pretty close to 60% fat, the rest made up of protein and carbs. I’m never over 20 grams of carbs so my protein is probably higher than most say is best. With all that said, at over 3 months in, I’m down less than 10 pounds. So maybe I’m doing things totally wrong but I feel great so… Slow and steady for me. Thanks for posting. It’s an interesting read.

Feel great - so not doing anything wrong - just listening to your body… :+1:

(She had one feck to give and that feck is gone.) #65

As you know - this is how I get it done also.

That’s because they are so hungry—maybe they’re not eating fat to satiety?

They are vegetarians…just saying…

This was excellent! Thx for including it.

They’re super aggro toward humans & have dodgy looking teeth so I think they might be full on raw vegans :hippopotamus:

Which both supports and refutes the CICO argument depending on which side of the fence you straddle and how pedantic you want to be.
I think this is the answer. Our bodies are capable of responding to energy demand in so many ways once the hormonal switching is functioning correctly.
It is just getting that switch right which is the tricky bit!

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #72

Dr. Fung says that the body reacts differently to fasting and to caloric restriction. When we restrict calories, the body is compelled to adjust its energy expenditure to compensate for the reduction in intake. When we fast, however, the body can simply take what it needs from reserves without having to reduce expenditure.

(Bob M) #73

His theory is that this is an evolutionary mechanism. If you’re fasting, this means you have no food. If this continues, you die. Your body therefore pumps you up with hormones and speeds your metabolism so you can run down that wildebeast.

#75

@That_Fat_Guy It just depends on what your insulin level is. If you’re restricting calories but eating often or eating a lot of carbohydrates, your insulin stays high and you can’t easily tap into your fat reserves. That’s why fasting becomes so much easier after a few months on keto: you have access to your stored fat.

This has been answered multiple times for you already. It is VASTLY different.

To me, this still seems like a low calorie diet. And while I like the fancy graph, and this makes logical sense, I think trying to do this would be incredibly difficult for me, even if I was to count calories. For instance, I have no idea what my calorie requirements are, and they change all the time. Right now, I’m working on a home improvement project where I bust my butt over the weekend. When that project stops or while it’s going, what are my calorie requirements?

One could say that you’d just look at the scale and determine this, but the scale is useless for this degree of accuracy. I had DEXA scans done, and over the course of a year, I gained 3.3 pounds of muscle and lost 5.4 pounds of fat. The scale only shows a 2 pound decrease over a YEAR. If I weigh myself daily, I can get plus or minus 2 pounds daily, and if I fast for >24 hours, I can gain or lose 5+ pounds by the scale.

And I eat differently every week. This week, I’m eating eggs, ham, cheese, salsa, and guacamole for “blunch” (breakfast and lunch). Next week, I’ll be eating beef liver and beef heart for lunch. I’ll go from eating higher fat to lower fat. And my wife and I make different dinners every week, sometimes keto, sometimes Nom Nom Paleo, sometimes steak, etc.

To even come close to that graph, it would require a degree of accuracy that I’m not willing to do. When I was on low fat, I counted calories to ensure that I got below 10% of my calories in total fat content. It was challenging and to do it with meat is even more challenging (what happens if you drain 80/20 beef?).

Theoretically, that’s a pretty graph, but realistically, it’s useless for me.

@SlowBurnMary This is a very old thread but still relevant to me - hope you all don’t mind me exhuming it.

My body IS currently HF :pensive: so going by this quote I could or should do keto with relatively low fat (??).

How would this work? High protein? If calories aren’t a consideration on keto, how would I determine how much fat is best for me?

Just the past 2 weeks I have actually increased my fat. This is my consumption for today.

The snack missing from the bottom of this screenshot is macademia nuts @ 2g carb.

It’s not quite typical as I don’t usually have an evening meal but decided to do so tonight (and now feel a bit yuk)… but the proportion of carb:protein:fat are fairly representative.

This is my weight loss pattern since starting a bit over 3 months ago (last measure on 11 Jan) - 9.2 kg (20 lb) lost.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

(Bob M) #80

It’s much easier to lose weight initially, as long as carbs are low. 18 pounds in 3 months is not bad. I’d keep doing what you’re doing.

It’s when you’ve been doing this for say 4+ years and still would like to lose a bit, that’s the issue. Then, try everything.

#81

I’d say keep on doing this, seems to be working. I think if you see the rate of weight loss slowing down, it might be something to revisit but you are in the earlier months of keto and this may be what you need for now. Only thing if recommend 3 months is to start shrinking your eating window (that’s if you aren’t already) bit by bit. Nothing drastic.

I did have to dial in/down on my fat intake as the months went on. When the time comes you may choose to decrease fat, say, 10g at a time and make sure it doesn’t affect your satiety before reducing it another 10g and so on.

(Paulene ) #82

Thanks for your advice @JustMo and @ctviggen .

I’m hoping very much that in 4 years my body won’t be high fat!

I currently have an eating window of approx 3-4 hours IF you don’t include my BP coffee at about 8am.
Most Mon-Fri I am finished eating by about 2pm and don’t start eating again until about 11am the next day… with the odd exception like today when I will have an evening meal to mix it up a bit (as recommended by @David_Stilley and others on this forum - see, I do listen!). Weekends I will usually have 2 meals - lunch and early dinner usually. Even with a narrow eating window, my daily calories are around 1800.

Increasing my fat intake is also a result of me starting to look for (not quite crave) something sweet, which I have not done since starting keto in October (not even over Christmas). I’m having diet jelly with cream at least once a day at the moment. :face_with_hand_over_mouth: I think it is emotional eating as I haven’t felt real hunger since starting keto. I’m hoping I will get sick of it soon and return to not wanting sweets again.

I’ve been doing this 6 years and I’m still technically overweight, just under obese. I have dropped from 43 inch pants to 34, to which I just transitioned. I also had to buy a new winter coat this year, as my old one was huge. All of my blood markers are excellent, including CAC score, but I am still technically heavy. I also have more muscle mass.

So, it depends on what you want. And you of course might be different. I have given up on being “ripped”, and am just trying to get closer to normal weight (though since all of my markers are good…I’m not sure why).
