Have our ideas of "sweet" changed this much?

I hate myself. Art’s posts are designed to get to folks and he succeeds. It’s hard not to try to take him down a few pegs.

Sorry for ruining your thread :disappointed:

I assume you are being facetious because I certainly didn’t want to elicit self-loathing!

All right. This is too vituperative to continue. Let me remind every one of our Community Guidelines, which ask you to attack ideas, not people. Whatever the merits of an argument, said argument is not enhanced by personal comments.

OK, we’ve done some cleanup in here. Please resume ON TOPIC conversation if you desire.

OK, I’ll bite. Paul’s idea of 100% chocolate being edible, I’m not sure about that. I can manage 85, maybe 90 on a good day. What I’d rather do is take the 85/90 percent, add some cocoa fat to it, melt it, with maybe a small amount of fake sweetener (or maybe not), and get something that’s fattier. All the companies seem to go for cocoa content, but I think a smaller amount of cocoa but more fat could be good.

Might have been. I really don’t like the taste of erythritol. And the aftertaste is unbearable.

You mentioned this in another thread some time ago and I have occasionally indulged in a square of unsweetened bakers chocolate with a dollop of peanut butter. So delicious!

I quite like the lindt 90%. I tried the 99% and that was yucky though. Apparently 9% makes a big difference.

We have them growing wild on our property and this year when I picked them I was amazed at how sweet they were compared to previous years. The only thing that is different is 18 months on keto.

I have now had two brands of 100% chocolate that I find good as an occasional treat. Montezuma’s Absolute Black and Eating Evolved Midnight Coconut.

They are not like eating baker’s chocolate. They don’t have a hint of sweetness, though.

I don’t believe I mentioned that two years ago I was still mixing it with heavy cream and stevia/erythritol, in order to make it palatable. A very short time in the microwave will melt a couple of squares. I then mixed it to the consistency of heavy fudge. I don’t remember how it happened, but I guess I just stopped bothering with the mix and started gnawing on the chocolate straight out of the box. And remember, this is Baker’s which is cheap stuff for baking with. I’m sure a brand of real chocolate would be even tastier.

I still have to lick and dip my 100% chocolate into a bit of Splenda. I just can’t do it straight. It’s like, instead of mouth watering, my mouth dries up and I can’t get it down without a touch of sweet.

I grabbed the wrong tea bag yesterday. Thought i was making peppermint tea…but accidently threw in sugar plum fairy tea by celestial seasonings in my cup. (Despite the name…no sugar but super fruity. I used to drink it to curb my sweet tooth when i was dirty keto. Have not touched it since). Took a sip and gagged. I hated it and dumped it all out. This did not even have sugar in it, but tasted too sweet for me! Since becoming carnivore, i do not like my beverages sweet. A few weeks ago my boyfriend who adds just 1 packet of sugar to his coffee, put his cup next to mine. I accidently picked it up , took a sip and realized it was his. I spit it out immediately. It tasted awful! I realize then how far i have come. I used to put 4 to 5 packets of sugar in my coffee or 6-10 packets (i wish i was kidding about that) of artificial sweetener in my coffeee. Now one sip of coffee with only 1 packet of sugar tastes like crap to me.

I get you all about the chocolate, as since I’ve been eating 85%+, anything lower seems way too sweet. I’m still not sure about all the oxalates in chocolate, though; I keep going through phases, not eating chocolate, to see what affects me. I’m still not sure. I do think that I have to keep chocolate further away from bedtime, as it does seem to affect my sleep (makes it worse) if I eat it too close to bedtime.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #43

I haven’t been worrying about snacks between supper and bedtime, so long as they are low-carb, because my relationship with food has been so messed up that I prefer snacking to bingeing on carbs. But I have been noticing a trend toward snacking less and less, as my satiety signaling grows stronger, and I get clearer on the difference between “needing” a little something and actual hunger.

Mind you, I know all the reasons for not eating between meals on keto, and it’s good advice, if anyone can manage it. But I also have to contend with my psychology, and that means sometimes choosing the lesser of two evils. As I just posted in another thread, keto is teaching me to listen better to my body, and the more I do that, the less power my psychological issues seem to have over me. Keto for the win!

Like you, I follow my body in terms of what to eat. Monday, I did not eat at all, worked out Tuesday morning, did not eat until about 10:30 am, had 5 eggs, a lot of ham, some blue cheese. Had dinner about 6:30pm, but was still hungry. Had yogurt with chocolate and shaved coconut (my “dessert”) at about 8pm. Was still hungry, and had slice ham, cheese, mustard at about 8:30pm. Was no longer hungry, but alas had somewhat poor sleep. It seems to correlate with chocolate, sadly, though of course it’s hard to tell. But if I eat chocolate (85%+) that late, I pretty much wake up and/or am restless at night.

Perhaps it’s the sugar, not the chocolate. Try buying unsweetened and sweetening it with a non-sugar sweetener?

(hottie turned hag) #46

Just an aside suggestion for you guys into that unsweetened choc, I can tell you the coconut BUTTER (NOT OIL) also called coconut manna (nothing added to it, it’s just pureed coconut) is so sweet on its own, if you pair it with the choco it prob would taste amazing. You can just spread it on the choc squares!

(Trish) #47

Hmmm. I wonder if I throw some coconut into the food processor, add some cocoa powder, maybe a bit of almond flour, and ?? – feel free to chime in here – to make some squares or balls if that would make a yummy snack? Might have to try next week after the Zornfast.
