Have any of you gained body fat while on keto?

Howdy!

I was wondering if any of you have gained body fat while eating ketogenically and NOT through carbs creeping in? How did it happen? How much did you actually have to eat before you put on significant extra body fat?

Thanks in advance - trying to ascertain how common this actually is.

Lord - he is a physical specimen. Thanks for the link, this was awesome.

Do you think the average human could do this any get similar results?

In general, I think it’s pretty hard to eat calories in excess of what’s required on keto. People can and do gain weight on keto though. More often I think people are at an energy balance on keto instead of the deficit required for weight loss. Hence the millions of LCHF folks who experience prolonged stalls.

Can’t remember his name, but one of the doctor/body builder types who blog about keto said that when he got really lean, still eating nutritionally and calorically dense foods, it was surprising how little he ended up eating. Makes sense to me.

There is someone who I would consider average who did the same challenge on YouTube. Over 21 days he gained about 7 lbs. But, I didn’t share because he struggled with insulin. We all know that insulin stops fat burning and causes storage. I think if he’d done exactly what Jason did it would be a better comparison.

(Jennifer ) #7

That’s very true about the insulin. You probably can’t remember - but do you happen to recall if it was 7 pounds in general, or 7 pounds of body fat?

The problem is he didn’t do a DEXA scan or anything like Jason so, all we had to go on was a regular bathroom scale. Which is about as trustworthy as a ketoer near a plate of bacon. He had a before and after and went from leanish to slightly more filled out. But, we don’t know if he had water weight or anything else going on.

I’m really hoping to do this experiment myself at some point in the future on YouTube as someone with a lot to lose.

Yeah there’s just no knowing without the proper data. He could have had a great poop on deck and been extra friggin hydrated. :joy:

That’s actually a really good point - especially with all those scales that ā€œmeasure body fatā€ with electrical resistance.

Hydration throws them off in a huge way, as does a LACK of hydration. If I do my big ole morning sprinkle, weigh myself on my Withings/Nokia scale shortly thereafter, my body fat measures at around 6-7%.

Sorry, but I do not have that low level of body fat.

If I weigh in after some coffee or even just water, that number jumps to 10-12%… still too low if I had to guess.

Body fat scales are simply hideously inaccurate. Without easy access to a dexa scan or similar, there’s just no way any of us are going to know if we lost or gained body fat doing Keto (edit: assuming the scale weight stays the same, of course.)

I’m a little different, but I haven’t seen the need to measure body fat…yet.

I’ve thought about dropping some coin on a DEXA, then comparing that to my (as of yet UNpurchased) body fat scale.

Somebody tell me why I need to know.

Even at the ridiculously low price of 50.00 USD for a Dexa at my (happily) Keto-Centric Clinic it doesn’t interest me much.

50 bucks, (plus a scale to compare it to.)

That’s 5 months membership at Planet Fitness.

Yeah. I’m skinny fat. I already know that for Zero Dollars And Zero Cents.

I also know for sure, that I’m adding some lean mass and moving in the right direction. Same price.

For half a hunnert, I can buy a HUGE Boston Butt and have some $$ leftover for the Charcoal and Apple Chunks to smoke it.

If knowing the Body Fat Number ever seems important to this Phormer Phattie, I’ll spring for it. It does seem to make a BUNCH of people happy, and I’m good with that.

Convince me I need to measure. I keep my Backup Wheels well greased, wink wink.

Yeah. I agree. I don’t need to know. My clothes fit, I look good, vanity purpose fulfilled. I’m good to go.

I tend to gain about 1 lb per month eating strict keto and eating to satiety. I’m able to maintain fairly stable weight by upping my carbs moderately through much higher intake of low energy density veggies while remaining at a low level of ketosis. To lose weight I do some fasting and being keto makes fasting doable.

Isn’t he, though? I binge-watched the entire 21-day challenge, and watching him try to choke down enough calories some days was just riotously funny. I have been an overeater for so many years (63 and deranged-as-hell metabolism here!) I could go in the kitchen and plate myself up 4000 calories with no problem at all.

In fact, I’m going to do a Feldman 3-day protocol next week in advance of a cholesterol check (just to see if I can do it and what happens), and use that as my ā€œfeastingā€ to head in to what I hope will be a 5 to 7-day fast. I’ll probably post a topic in Community as I do it.

    God, I love this forum!!

What would REALLY have been interesting would have been if he went on a 7-day (or longer) FAST after all that feasting.

Same here - except I have 10 more years of over-eating experience than you. I can consume massive quantities of food, and have for years. I weight about 220. If I had not loved playing sports over the years, I hate to think how much weight I would have gained.

I did not know that ā€˜normal’ people ate so much less. When I went out to lunch ā€˜with the girls’, I thought their eating so much less, splitting meals, leaving food on their plates and such, was just for show! It isn’t!

One of the adjustments I’m having to make on keto is realizing I’m still eating too much, though it seems right to me. On lazy keto last year I gained 10 pounds, and while I was feeling better in many ways, weight loss (cough, cough) went the wrong way. Now I’m concentrating on cooking less, measuring/weighing portions, eating less, …and fortunately as I transition into fat adaptation, my level of hunger is much less.

I’m finding moving into a sustainable, more effective keto lifestyle is taking many tweaks as the weeks pass.

(Jay AM) #18

I think the real struggle is the fat. If you tried to eat 4000 cals in fat, you’d be feeling it.

Yep, same boat. I am getting a LOT better at estimating a proper serving of things (I put it on the plate, and if I’m saying ā€œthat doesn’t look like enough!ā€ then it’s probably about right! :smiling_imp: ). The saving grace of this diet is not having to snack, and having two meals, or even one meal a day and being happy with it. I still need to get better at ā€œmindful eatingā€ and at slowly and thoroughly chewing my food. I’ve been a ā€œfood wolferā€ since they taught us to eat in a 30-minute window in elementary school (more like 20 after you got through the serving line).

I dunno, I could keep my carb and protein macros in line and make 4000 pretty easily. We’ll see next week! I’m going to watch the ā€œJasonā€ videos again and take some notes on what he ate. I know I need to go get a pork shoulder or pork belly to cook, for sure.
