Has anyone tried Vital Greens on Keto?

(Warren) #1

Hi Everyone, Been in ketosis for 47 days now and loving it. I live remote Australia and it is very difficult to get fresh vegetables. Very sick of canned food. Have access to more meat and fat than you could possibly dream of.
My questions are, has anyone tried Vital Greens? I have been told it is kinda sweet. If it is, will it kick me out of ketosis? Or should I just take a mineral/vitamin supplement?
Any extra advice I would be happy to hear.

Just a reminder I live very remote and I just can’t walk to a shop. Mail often takes between 2 weeks to a month.

I too live in remote country - maybe not as remote as that. From what I know vital greens is an okay thing if you are starting out in nutrition as it gives your body a boost on things you may be down on - but its not entirely the holy grail of health. on the I QUIT SUGAR website they tout it - i think it is a commercial interest thing.
The Monk fruit powder if its pure monk fruit won’t get you out of ketosis. But these: Natural Vanilla Flavour, Natural Pineapple Flavour, sound suspiciously like code for MSG which is a dangerous neurotoxin which can cause seizures and is highly addictive. ditto for the Thaumatin - which is an isolate which means it is basically a pretty nasty ingredient - if you really want to be HEALTHY and not just in ketosis I would only have this for a short period and then get off it - Xanthan Gum - is a glucose derivative so its pretty dicey. besides Vital greens is a rip off. You can use that money to get much better value nutrients - its your money you can do what you want with it - but I wouldn’t bother getting my nutrition that way all those isolate in the ingredients mean that they have taken a good healthy ingredient - chemicalised the daylights out of it and spat it out in a chemical form - which your body may not even know how to process or make bioavailable - WHOLEFOODS are better by far where possible. Use food as your nutrients. Things like spirulina/chlorella have more bang for the buck and are able to be purchased on eBay cheaply and last months and months.

I would say best bet is sprout things - mail order organic wheat berries and sprout them - harvesting at seven days… Or other such dry goods that you may be able to sprout at your own convenience which store well…

also - whatever climate your in - it is suited to grow something. Establish what that is, and plant. I have a pretty rough climate, but we manage a quite a few pumpkin, amaranth greens and purselain grows wild as weeds (which I use in traditional cuisine) and I have a few produce animals to eat from. I pack my deep freezer with as much as I can - are frozen veg an option?. I avoid cans as much as I possibly can - with the exception of BPA free coconut cream… Coconut oil in bulk would be a good option as a little will help you reach satiety quicker.

Another nutrient dense food that lasts is nuts, as well as sardines (I can’t eat them personally but they are apparently top stuff in nutrition). You may wish to opt for a 10kg bucket of ghee which can be stored unrefrigerated. Also I find cabbage will last for ages outside of the fridge and has quite a good nutritional profile.

There is a dry leaf I eat (its middle eastern dish) it comes in big bags and looks like weed lol. but its extremely nutritious and its eaten as a stew… Its called dried Egyptian spinach /jews mallow and is served with meat and fat (keto) - skip the rice. you can order it online and it stores for years! maybe it grows where you are and seeds might be of benefit? The reason I mention it is that it keeps well dried for years and years and is very healthy next to meat!

If you do want to spend money on minerals I recommend this one

or this one

There are other things that I can’t think of - but I say in closing to plant what is suited to your area!

Thanks Zu for your reply. I was thinking about the sprout thing and have it on a sprinkler timer. we will see how it goes anyway.
The reason why I started keto is that I have leaky gut with a huge amount of food intolerance, including nuts, coconut, fodmaps, gluten, dairy. It turns out it seems to be a genetic thing as I my whole family (mother’s side) has the same intolerance to these foods.
Egyptian spinach sounds delish. That is what is so good about this site. I would never have learnt about these things without it.

Hey there!! First off, I think it’s important to note that you do not need tons of vegetables to get the nutrition you need. So if you feel like you aren’t getting enough vegetables I wouldn’t stress too much.

Second, can you provide a link to what vital greens you are speaking of? A quick check of the ingredients will helps us tell you if it’s keto.

Ahhhhh! I seee!

My little sis doing the leaky gut/candida protocol now and she thinks its hell!
She is no simple carbs/dairy/ or fermented for for 6 weeks - but it seems like her candida (a yeast thats only supposed to be in the bowl - which made its way through all digestive tract, even mouth/tongue) is resistent…

What is your leaky gut from? have you identified the cause? Not chewing food adequately/poor digestion/ yeast candida overgrowth/ stress?

I will tell you the things I have advised her and maybe your can research and get to ordering… 1stly… drinking Pau D’arco tea first thing at morning and last thing at night… follow this with a few drops oregano oil in water… this will burn your insides as is kills everything - good, bad and ugly (later you may need propiotic or prebiotic foods), Then follow this up with 3-6 drops of iodine in glass of water… Its a given that you will feel like absolute rubbish… Also swallow garlic whole and chewed if you can tolerate it… after a short time ones body will be candida free if they also limit simple carbs…

Then next step is to heal the gut… do bone broths! and THIS ONE is very beneficial… get marshmallow root - boil 2 TBS in about 2-3 cups water for 30 mins… drink on empty stomach… its lines gut and allows it to no longer be permeable… google benefits of marshmallow root! not the fluffy white confectionary!

All the best… hope some of this is of benefit!

Also… I just wanted to say that living far out of town what has helped me most is having a bit of stock… a few goats for milk, cheese and meat, a few chicken for meat and eggs, I used to have a cow and I never went hungry having her… She always was generous and Id always have plenty to much on… .Plus a few veggies… It makes things easier and stretches out shopping… as long as you can pre-calculate their feed costs and its viable (taking into account bad seasons etc).

Anyways all the best

I can’t help thinking that having Zoe Harcombe’s Five-A-Day is better for you and your cash flow than forking out on supplements

Hi Zu, I have all the above plus I was more worried about being an elite sports person than worrying about my future. Over-training seems to be something that young people are not informed about…especially back in the 90s.
Thank you for this advise I am certainly going to look into this especially the tea and herbs.

My sister was just last week in week 5 no simple carbs but her candida was still present. The thought of going longer to kill candida crushed her… So she has upped the anti on the oregano and it’s actually doing wonders! Her tongue is clear and her breath is nice and not pooey! I think the pau d’arco and oregano combo worked for her stubborn candida… In about a week she will do the marshmallow tea and probiotics!

But it’s 100% about good thoughts! I tell you she needs to think right to stay cured!
Food turns to poison in the gut when one doesn’t think good.

Totally agree with the thoughts. That is what I LOVE about Keto. My thoughts are so clear and not only my life but people around me seem to be positive as well.
I am actually not missing carbs and will probably never go back to carbage. I only wish I knew about this when was training; as well as the information about over-training.

THIS!! Not only that (vegetables are not vital to nutrition) but living in Australia gives you access to some of the most nutritious beef on the planet. Wagyu. I’m drooling just thinking of it.

IMO all these powder are way too gross and hard to ingest.

I agree that the need for vegetables and fibre is over emphasized, but i’m not ready to accept that you shouldn’t have any. I think there is enough evidence that the gut bacteria is related to health, and they prefer to feed on soluble fibre.

also to avoid eating too much protein, some green plant material helps to get more nutrients.

the solution for me is spirulina. This is the best form i can find and i take them most morning
