Has anyone gotten off keto to break Plateau

(rosa) #1

Hello,

has anyone stopped Keto to try to break plateau? i have been strugling for a few months I keep going up and down between 5 lbs gain and losing but cant seem to continue losing after i hit a certain weight. I’ve been at the same 175-180 lbs for like three months. I was thinking of going off keto for a few weeks and try to detox and then get back on my Keto wagon. Has anyone tried if so did it worked? thanks in advance.

I found it curious that you are saying you might want to “go off keto for a few weeks and try to detox”. Do you have something in particular in mind? Some kind of a fast, maybe? Were you thinking of switching it up for a few weeks and going to something like a plant based vegan nearly zero fat kind of thing to shake things up? Or maybe “to detox” was more of a phrase thrown in?

No biggie, but I was just wondering a little about what you were thinking. There are a lot of different ways to shake things up. Fasts of all sorts (intermittent fasting, alternate day fasting, multi-day fasting), fasts (kind of an odd term as one still eats) like an “egg fast”, or “fat fast”. There are some who go carnivore for a time. There are some who go dairy or sweetener free for a time. There are some who change up their exercise routines dramatically. Lots of different things out there people do to shake things up.

Anyway, was just curious…

For a couple meals, yes. A solid carb binge will leave me feeling all my sins, but can help shake things up a bit.

Detox is the wrong word. Retox is what you’re talking about Rosa.

do you log foods? Accurately? Have you considered changing your eating pattern? More or less fasting? Upping or lowering fat or protein? There are lots of better ways to go than taking a couple weeks off LCHF/Keto. I have found that taking a few weeks off, without switching out my exercise, generally makes getting back on very difficult, mentally.

It might work for you. I always think that if a questions comes to someone, then they should listen. I have been very focused on making sure my hormones are right. Those pesky guys can sure boss our bodies around. As women, I think we have a much bigger/harder job considering all the different hormonal events we go through in a month.

I broke my plateau eating 2 large jars peanut butter over 10 days. I don’t normally eat it, so it was an extra on top of my regular food.

i currently looking into bio-identical hormones. my hormones are all over the place since my hysterectomy.

I’m affraid of eating more or adding carbs because with my luck I will break the plateau but the wrong way. LOL i don’t want to gain

If you go off keto what will likely happen is you will gain weight and then going back on keto you will have to lose all that new weight and eventually you will end up right back where you are now. So something about what you are doing now is not working. Try the intermittent fasting, or alternate day fasting. Have you cut out snacks? I’m in the same boat stuck for months and realize that something else has to change so trying carnivore for now -next will be cutting back fats. I think going off keto is just a bad idea - carbs are toxic to us. Remember the bad things they do, it’s not just about weight loss.

Yes, and it didn’t work. I stopped counting carbs and just ate as many veggies and nuts as I wanted, so I went well over 20 carbs although I was still low carb. It made me gain weight (likely the nuts, not the veggies)

I did an experiment recently about 5 days ago.

I had been hovering on the same weight for 3 weeks.

My 1 day experiment was keto coffee for breakfast, lunch I consumed some sweet potato french fries. Dinner I consumed some fried bananas. Also consumed a drink of some exogenous ketones.

I didn’t experience any carb pains luckily.

Since that day I have lost weight every day and a few inches. It pushed me to the lowest weight achieved so far.

It was just an experiment and not something I expect results to be repeatable but it was an interesting reaction.

Was that all you consumed? What I’m getting at is, did you increase your carbs that day but keep your calories low?

“I broke my plateau eating 2 large jars peanut butter over 10 days.”

Ugh. That would make me nauseous. I’m not allergic but more than a spoonful has that affect on me. But I love peanuts. Especially boiled peanuts.

I had a little bit of meat also that day but not a lot (some steak and lamb gyro style). I wasn’t super hungry and was full easily.

Not really “go off” but I have had a carb cheat to sort of shock my body. I don’t do often, but what I find is that if initially go up, but yes, it can help me break a plateau if I get right back into it.

Word of caution though. Whenever I do cheat, I struggle with carb cravings for some time after. I’ve found this is lessened with savory carb cheats vs sweet carb cheats, but it’s still a struggle. So you have to weigh whether it’s worth it or not.
