Hey there…
I have some serious poo problems.
My poos are like marbles, slightly bigger, not perfectly round, but misshaped.
My lower colon won’t move them, I have to put on a glove and get them out. And some of them sometimes have blood on them.
WTF.
I eat more fat than protein
Only beef and water.
Am I just not digesting food at all?
I came from fruitarianism, it’s been 4 weeks.
I need help and I don’t trust any of the doctors avaialable. Please help.
Hard poop
I can appreciate where you are coming from as I have had similar issues as well. I do 20:4 IF and keto and have been going through issues where I “have to go” but it is like it is too big to come out and gets to the point of being distressing and having to resort to things like you mention.
Salt is not an issue for me as I am easily averaging 3500-4000mg a day.
I tried increasing my fiber via things like Benefiber that my wife takes but without any improvement. The last few days have gone pretty well with regular movements that were easy and the only thing I have really changed is adding ground flaxseed (13g twice a day). It has been great, especially since I really expected problems since prior to that I had emptied pretty well and then went 4 days without any movement (though without any distress at that time, just didn’t have to go).
YMMV
Magnesium supplementation. More salt. and maybe a non-flax, non-psyllium fiber supplement. Something to feed your microbiome.
It’s a huge change for your digestive system to go from all fruits to all meat. It will take time. In the meantime, take some magnesium supplements - I like Malate/Citrate combo, seems to help quite a bit with these issues.
I think your main problem is your gut biome has not yet adapted to Keto, this happened to me, it took me 9 weeks for things to settle down to a point where I was regular again. BUT once you get through this stage you should find that your poo will be a lot smaller, and more like a smooth tube. Its fantastic.
So you may need some sort of laxative to help you in the meantime. I read somewhere that you can speed the process up for changing your biome, you may need to do a search of the forums. All the suggestions given do help but until your gut biome changes expect these kind of things to happen. I wish someone had told me this BEFORE keto because it is a real issue for some of us.
Once I got it rolling I found that adding a teaspoon of psyllium husks to my omelette mix everyday helped to keep it smooth. I also had a problem when I started eating whole meal bread (even just one slice), it really bound me up again. But yes keep the water, electrolytes up especially salt. Good luck.
Check out this video where Dr Phinney explains the reason why salt and a few other minerals are important on keto at 16:40. He lists a lack of salt as one reason for constipation.
Erythritol has worked wonders for me. And it is a great sweetener with zero carbs, nothing to lose!!
I NEVER get blocked up now
That would probably work for me, but after five months keto I neither eat nor crave anything sweet. So an avocado a day for me.
I use psyllium husk capsules and I make sure to eat avocado or macademia nuts everyday. So, the recommended dosage for psyllium husk is supposed to be 3 capsules 2 to 3 times daily, but I just take one and it helps a lot.
Magnesium citrate. I take inulin fiber, but that on its own doesn’t seem to do it. Other kinds of magnesium supplement don’t seem to do it.
Since ketoers recommend taking much more salt than I’m used to eating, I tried drinking water with one gram of salt in it. Diarrhea resulted. But that might not be the effect you’re going for.
Good luck!
