Gut health

(Jeff Nail) #1

Do I need to worry about my gut health on keto?

(icky) #2

What do you mean exactly?

If concerned, add fermented foods to your meals. Good for gut health and yummy at the same time.

Bunny has a bit to say on this. @atomicspacebunny

I tried adjusting my gut “health” for 5-6 months. I used potato starch, plantain flour, plantains, heated and cooled potatoes, raw potatoes, even heated and cooled white rice, many different probiotics, kimchi, fermented foods. (Of course, eating potatoes and white rice totally kicked me out of ketosis, but it was an experiment.) If there was a benefit, I could not find one. I could only find detriments. At the time, I was using finger-prick glucose monitors (have since bought a continuous glucose monitor), and those are so inaccurate that it was hard to tell if there was a benefit in morning fasting blood glucose.

If I kept to just potato starch, ketosis might not have been affected, but I could not tell that well, as I was using BHB blood tests, and the tests were $5/eac at the time, so I did not test as much as I would’ve liked to.

For me, I still eat some fermented foods (yoghurt and pickles), but I find near zero carb or zero carb to be the best for me.

Also, I’m trying the L reuteri yoghurt from Wheat Belly, but have not experienced any benefit. https://www.wheatbellyblog.com/2018/06/the-unique-probiotic-effects-of-l-reuteri/

I listened to a pretty good podcast from Dr Anthony Gustin on The Keto Answers podcast yesterday. Covered a lot on this subject and went into detail on the many variables. Will give you a better idea of whats going on and how to approach it.

I’ve had digestive issues for years, which had been lumped into the general diagnosis of IBS, and nothing I ever did made it any better, just different. Finally found a better gastro doc, and I’m now getting tested for intestinal conditions. So far, I do not have H.pylori (causes ulcers & stomach cancer), but I do have SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), for which I will be taking very specific antibiotics for 2 weeks, and probiotics afterwards.

My point is, if you have issues, there are diagnostic tests to rule things out, or confirm a diagnosis. My doc first listened to my upper GI tract with a stethoscope, and said, “Yup, you have SIBO”, according to the audio rumblings - which he later confirmed with a 3-hr breath test at his office.

(icky) #10

Which antibiotic were you given for SIBO, Betsy?

(Jeff Nail) #11

I just saw Thomas Delauer on you tube about 5 common mistakes on keto and endotoxin. If you guys could look that up it explains it.O h yeah,i do not have any gut issues I was just concerned.

Haven’t gotten it yet, waiting for the pharmacy to contact me. It’s called Xifaxan, evidently one of those really expensive antibiotics. Waiting to hear if it’s going to be covered by my ins.

Here’s the Dr. helping my daughter with her leaky gut syndrome. She was diagnosed with IBS, pre-diabetes, thyroid issues, and inflammation. Now, she has none of those issues and lost 50 pounds.

Her current favorite book is Eat Dirt, by this physician

I hope you find this helpful
Keep calm and keto on
