Green drinks

(Catherine Florendo) #1

Hi, I am new to keto and am wondering if green drinks can replace the huge daily amount of salad we need to have on the ketogenic diet. Much if the time I really don’t feel like eating or I eat dinner but then have no appetite for salad which I know is important. I would rather just drink green drinks to get the green nutrients instead of the huge salad. Is this ok?

You don’t need a huge daily amount unless you want it! But I too am curious about green drinks i.e. wheat grass and others…

Great question!

Green drinks are horrible for your kidneys. Don’t drink them frequently if at all.

You do not need a huge amount of salad. You don’t need any if you don’t want any. When you do want greens you can wilt some spinach in oil and it reduces way down.

There’s a Facebook Keto group that insists on 7-8 cupfuls of green leafies per day. Personally, I do best if I have a handful once or twice a week (if that much!) And many people do really well with no veggies at all.

I think I’ve had maybe 3 salads in the 7 weeks or so I’ve been keto

Green drinks as in juicing veggies?

That FB group seems dodgy. That amount of leafy greens could push you beyond ketogenic carb levels for some.

I agree. I’ve been lurking a bit, just to see if I could learn anything. Not much to learn. I’m about to un-follow.

I’m following Dr Berg on YouTube who says it’s important to get 7-10 cups of salad a day on the keto diet. Apparently it could be dangerous without lots of veggies.

I mean the powdered green drink mixes you get at health food stores.

I don’t understand exactly why Dr. Berg counts vegetable carbs as an additional 5% of calories, in addition to carbohydrates, as though vegetables don’t have macros…
He says:

An average body needs between 7-10 cups of salad or vegetables to meet the required amount for some nutrients like potassium.

But wait… 7-10 cups of salad vegetables to get 4700 mg of potassium…
https://www.botanical-online.com/english/potassium.htm

Animal sources of potassium: Potassium is virtually found in all foods of animal origin such as meat, Fish, and milk or their derivatives.

A bit of lite salt and adequate protein and you’re good. There’s not much that you actually need vegetables for, mineral wise.

Dr. Berg also doesn’t believe vaccinations are safe. I throw his videos in the trash.

Just check the carbs. I know the powders you mean, if the carbs are under 5 and you feel you need it then go for it.
