Grain versus carb restriction?

#1

I’ve been Keto for over a year and loving it. About 3 weeks, I tried completely eliminating grains and I found I went from feeling great to feeling really great.

(I may be a special case as I am HLA-B27 positive and grains have been implicated in aggravating arthritis symptoms for us. I now feel like I have zero inflammation and my mental attitude is better).

Seems like grains and carbs are really confounded - go low carb and you can’t help but reduce grain consumption, and vice versa. I am now curious if the benefits I’ve realized come primarily from reducing carbs or grains (or even gluten?). Maybe it’s a stacking of benefits, a virtuous cycle? Appreciate hearing from anyone who has had a similar N=1 experience.

I’ve entirely eliminated grains from day one. While I am skeptical about glutens being problem, I have no doubt carbs are. Grains are carbs, and I’ve said so-long to them a long time ago.

I’ve avoided grains right from the start. They have no place in my body.

I cut grains from day one. It seems like even one serving would take one over the carb count for the day.

However, every three weeks or so I do have a taco or two involving corn tortillas. (I cannot tell a lie.). But for my day to day keto, no grains.

What kind of grains were you eating? My plan (from my doc) eliminates all grains and seeds.

Hey @CatGirl - I had been previously eating a small amount of grains (breads, tortillas, breading, beer, rice, etc.) Assuming that as long as total carbs were low and I remained in ketosis, I was cool.

I am now finding that I go from good to better by limiting carbs to high fiber veggies such as asparagus, broccoli, onion, kale, etc.
