Goodbye Fellow Ketorians

(M.T) #1

Firstly, credits to all of you who chose this lifestyle change or the Keto lifestyle has found you! Because it is a very big learning curve for anyone who had never paid attention to what they put in their mouths. If it works for you, keep on going and keep up the good work you’ve done so far. With this awesome forum and great support, it’s not as complicated as what you think it might be.

What I’ve Learnt & Achieved From The Keto Diet

  • I’ve paid so much more attention to what goes into my body.

  • I appreciate “real” foods even more than ever before.

  • It helped me understand my body so much better and learnt how to listen to it. The feeling and how it affected my body with and without carbs and sugar in my diet.

  • There is no miracle diet. Consistency, determination, understanding your own needs and patience is key. No two person are the same, what works for someone else won’t necessarily work for you even when you choose the same lifestyle, because our bodies are created differently. So don’t be discouraged if something didn’t work out for you! You just haven’t mastered your own formula.

  • I lost 2 kg (4.4lbs), 2 inches around my chest, waist and hip in 3 weeks accompanied by working out 4 days a week with a few cheat days.

  • I don’t like/crave sugar and white rice that much anymore as I feel no satisfaction in my taste buds and stomach as I remembered except for my own mind.

Why Goodbye Then?
-I jumped into the Keto Diet too quickly without considering how much it’s going to cost me. I live in Singapore where it is surrounded mostly by carb rich foods and if I want to eat “healthy” or modified orders outside, it’s going to cost roughly around $10 per meal to keep me full which I’m not willing to spend on a daily basis. Also, I do have a slight sweet tooth. So purchasing of sweeteners like Stevia, Erythrithol, baking needs like Coconut Flour, Almond Flour etc. is inassesible and expensive because we do not have local production and everything is imported or I need to spend more on shipping fees.

  • I got the Keto Rash. Never in my life I have got such a bad rash. I know there are cures and preventions but is that another cost I’m willing to invest in again? Not really. Because supplements in Singapore is expensive as well. I have spent days and weeks researching and studying about the Keto Diet, the side effects and cures/prevention, almost everything I need to know. I’m also not willing to sacrifice my aesthetic by hanging on to the rash hoping that it might go away soon enough for any special occasions or a gamble in hopes that it won’t leave a scar.

Overall it is not a practical lifestyle choice for me, but I’ll say it is a good “cleanse” once in awhile. I’m jealous! That you guys are able to continue on with this lifestyle because to be honest, I loved it. I love how restrictive it is, how much control I have on my own body, how it made me felt and how much I’ve learnt and “loss”.

Disclaimer
This is just my own experience and thoughts and by no means am I bashing this diet at all because I loved it and I tried so hard to make it work.

I hope the best for each and every one of you fighters out there, whether you’re in the Keto Diet for weight loss or for health reasons, making your first step and executing this lifestyle is a bold move I’d say. Hang in there and stay fit and healthy! :muscle:

Hi Miss M

Obv you must do what feels best for you, but a couple of things to think about are:

  • the longer you do it that sweet tooth will vanish
  • the longer you do it the less hungry you are. Eating costs go down.

It may be worth googling low carb on a budget. All my meals cost way less than what you’re expecting to spend. Good luck!

Hey Splotchy
Yes I do understand that my sweet tooth will subside, and I’ve already experienced the wonderful effect from this diet but some times, you know, hormones.
For the cost part, I’d say I’m someone who prefers to dine in Foodcourt or “Kopitiam”, a cheaper dining option in Singapore. They usually sells food with Rice or Noodles, otherwise to modify food for example Chicken Rice, I can omit the rice but the quantity of Chicken will not be enough to call it a meal so I’d have to double the chicken which usually adds up to the cost sadly.

Good luck.

Please remember you can go high fat, low carb, but if you go high carb, you will probably want to do low fat. High carb, high fat will not work. Did you consider doing the vegetarian or vegan version of LCHF diet? That works for lots of people.

Having been to China and eating at one of the “food courts” a couple of times with colleagues I know exactly where you are coming from!

Here in the US there are lot of choices with cheap meats. The Chinese food courts had many vendors but they all served basically the same thing and rice and noodles made up the bulk. Protein was in tiny amounts.

The only thing that saved me trying to eat keto there was the abundance of low carb veggies in savory sauces.

But I got astonished looks from my Chinese colleagues when I declined the rice or steamed bread in the lunch cantina. It did not compute! LOL

The best to you. It was gracious of you to bid farwell and provide your explanation. That takes guts and care and concern for others.I do hope you find a heathy path that will allow you to expense and acquire needed products that make you health and at peace. Thanks again for your consideration. Best of luck to you.
P.S. I sometimes forget that in the USofA I take more for granted than I should. I thank you for bringing that home to me by sharing your reality.

Thank you for your tips! I will continue on with a simpler diet based on my body type (Mesomorph), moderate amounts of carb, protein & fats with lots of veggies!
I am so sorry to say that, I can’t do without meat on a daily basis, but it sounds like an awesome cleanse once in awhile. Will definitely look into that!

Thanks Janie for being able to relate to me! In most Asian cuisine, they/we use Corn Starch, Flour, Sugar & MSG in our sauces which I wouldn’t advise any Ketorians to order most food that comes with sauces and gravy, even the savory ones. There’ll be Sugar in a Chilli Paste and a seemingly healthy stir fried vegetable platter could also contain Corn Starch/Flour, Sugar & MSG which could sneakily add up to your carb count and sugar intake. So take caution.

I know what you mean! Because in China they heavily rely on Steamed Buns, Rice and Noodles in their daily diet, definitely an eye opener for them :joy:

Thank you Ohioms, just wanted to share my experience and to let people know that it’s okay to steer into whatever direction that works best for anyone and don’t be discouraged. Because ultimately, our goal is to eat healthier, be healthier, take control of our own body and to feel awesome no matter which diet/lifestyle choice we make.

Thank you for being honest, I’ve always envied the choices you guys have in your country! Even some of the more common produce to you like Avocado, is not that easy to find it in our neighborhood supermarkets and we’ll have to go to a major supermarket or an upscale marketplace to get fresher ones.

MissM you are soooo right. I was in the military 20+ years and a Air Force Brat. I had the priviledge of living in both Berlin and Japan. I remember Europe was not as drastic a cultural shift as Japan and Korea. I recall no lettuce or green veggies for two years, and also some fantastic substitutions available when venturing out in the local economy. And I do full understand your situation. I have faith you will find the right balance for you and your family, just may take time, imagination and some compromises…it will come. Thanks again for sharing and do hope it will come to inner peace and balance for you.

I heard Dr Phung once said if you limit the time of eating ( no snacks between meals) and you excersise moderately you will benefit no matter what diet you are on.

You might just rework your thinking a bit. Or good luck in whatever comes next.

I live in China, and it does take some explaining to friends. But I’ve found even if friends don’t 100% understand, they are supportive. Just tonight a friend invited me to eat with her and she specified that there are a lot of veggies and I don’t have to eat the rice. So sweet!

And yes, imported foods are more expensive. But meats are pretty cheap here. Singapore is probably more expensive. But bacon comes with free oil to keep in a jar by the stove! And buffet style diners are easy because you just point at what you want and purposely don’t think about what oil they are using. Plus every 7-11 has lovely tea eggs!

Also, I didn’t tell anyone and was fairly antisocial until I had visible weight loss. People tend not to argue with success!

There a different party’s to health and I hope you find one that works for you. :sunglasses:
