Going to try a sardine "fast"

(Bob M) #1

Tried a regular fast of 3.5 days last week, but bailed on the first day. I think I did too much over the weekend and had a bit of a cold.

I thought I’d try a sardine “fast”, which I’ve never done before. I’ll see how far I can get. I was going to eat OMAD tomorrow, where the one meal is sardines. Then have two (or three?) meals of sardines on Wednesday, then one meal of sardines again on Thursday. The OMAD meals are late, after 7pm.

I’ll report back.

That’ll be an interesting experiment.

This is probably going to sound dumb, but I’m more or less following one day a week fasting that has morphed into just doing OMAD and otherwise doing TMAD but with less AR (anal-retentiveness) and I’ve been in the same narrow weight range (like plus or minus two pounds) all year.

How can one be on maintenance and still not lose weight?

If that +/- 2 pounds was centered 10 or 15 pounds lower, I’d be celebrating.

Yeah, I’d like to weigh a little less, but can’t quite figure out how to get there. Doing OMAD two days a week (due to driving to/from work and spending 2.5 hours just driving per day) doesn’t seem to help.

I’ve been trying 3.5 days of fasting per month, but I don’t always do that. It’s hard to find a good time to do this. Also, it’s still tough to fast 3.5 days.

I have lost a little weight, but I’d like to lose a bit more.

I thought the sardine fast would at least allow me to eat something. I assume it’s more like a “low calorie” few days (how many sardines can one eat?) than a “fast”.

And I might try exercising during the fast, which I don’t do when I do water/black coffee/tea fasting.

Ben Bikman talks about taking GLP-1 drugs, and he suggests using low doses of that while going on keto, then getting off the drugs after a while. I think, however, that I “broke” something in my hormones/system, as I can not be hungry, but if I eat, I get hungry and will eat more than I thought I would. Last night, for instance, I wasn’t hungry that much, but ended up eating quite a bit after starting. Something like a GLP-1 drug might help with that.

Anyway, I’ll see if I can power through 3 days of sardines. I got both oil-based and water-based sardines. My wife thinks this is unpalatable. I’ll show her!

The sardine fast reminds me of one of my favorite fast keto lunches. I mash together a tin of sardines, an avocado, and a couple of hard boiled eggs (I make them ahead and so always have a few in the fridge). Among other virtues, each ingredient is quantized, you might say. You can’t have an extra half a tin or half an avocado or half an egg if you’re still hungry.

Well, that was a bust.

I ended up eating 6 cans, 3 water and 3 oil. Oddly, the oil is better, as the fish is moister. But that’s about 1,000 calories of fish (170 calories/can). Yikes!

I think one of the ideas is that sardines are very filling. In this podcast, they rave about how filling sardines are:

My problem #1 was the same as I’ve always had: if I eat, I get hungry. So, I got hungry after 1,000 calories of fish. I ended up eating a 5% yogurt (from Costco) with some Macadamia nuts.

Whether something is nutritious or not doesn’t seem to affect my hunger after eating, as I could do this for everything, including steak. (Not sure about liver: never tried it.)

Problem #2 was that I did not have a container into which I could put the oils/water from the cans. I dumped the water down the sink, but we are on a well and can’t dump oil down the sink. So, I dumped into the garbage can.

My teenager came into the kitchen and freaked about the smell. I don’t blame her. I took the trash out, cleaned all cans, cleaned the sink.

I also had stomach issues at night and in the morning. I guess my stomach isn’t ready for 6 cans of fish.

An interesting trial, but I guess not everyone is ready for a sardine “fast”.

I’ll have to go back to my normal water/black coffee and tea fast.
