...going skiing for a week- choc bar mid afternoon a good idea or not?

…i will be skiing with people better than me… it’s going to be tough physically. i’m wondering about the wisdom of having a carb (chocolate!) boost in the afternoon- surely there’s some sense n thinking it’ll help my tired muscles… any opinion appreciated. Oli.

You don’t need a carb boost - and there would surely be better choices than chocolate if you did - as long as you’re fat adapted.

Make sure you have water available for sure. I will be in the same boat next month (Taos, NM). Lots of comfort food around ski resorts so it will be interesting. I would personally pack some almonds or macadamia nuts for a snack or energy boost. You could also pack a carb bar just in case but it may lead you into temptation knowing its there. Skiing is very demanding so you will burn the carbs fast. I can run fasted and feel good but skiing while fat adapted will be a whole different experience for me. Going from 760 feet to 12,000 feet in one day is also taxing. Where you headed?

Skiing will burn it off so quickly that it won’t matter in terms of keto - that is not what is important.

Add sugar and caffeine to a remote location and good times with friends and you have a recipe for a big keto derailment.

So, definitely a bad idea.

Per @Rclause - pack some high quality macadamia nuts for something to munch on but also, as a keto reinforcement.

lol… yes …what am i thinking… i’ve been off the beer, but will be back on it on hols!

…i wonder how my derailment will feel.

@Rclause …Meribel …land of the Confit de Canard :slight_smile:

I will be drinking beer as well, and scotch, and wine. maybe a martini.

The legend of Taos is the founder Ernie Blake would hide Martinis around the mountain and mark the trees where he hid them. He one day was giving a lesson and the woman just froze up and could not move out of fear. He sent his son down to get “moma” to make some martinis and bring them back. He held the martini out to the women and said drink this or you will die here. She did and he said she skied down like a ballerina.

top story!

If you have been off processed sugar for a while and then suddenly eat a bunch of it, there’s no telling how your body will react. It may make you feel terrible and trigger cravings.

Nuts and beef sticks will keep you safe and on plan.

Are you bringing any headache medicine?

I haven’t had beer in a long time - years. Beer is one reason I got fat. It has massive calories, the vast majority of which are simple carbs. At least good beer does. It’s the perfect hammer to pickle your liver and cause insulin resistance.

Supposedly, high doses of saturated fat helps protect your liver, so you might consider maybe pemmican, something with coconut oil.

Am I wrong here in thinking that the only people who would need a “carb boost” are those who burn carbs, not fat (i.e., non-Ketoers)?

I think being a fat burner will help tremendously. You should have more energy overall. However, unless you ski all the time, you’re going to get tired. And the large number of calories you use, you’ll get hungry too. Personally, I could keep to high fat (like pemmican), and avoid carbs, but this is also a vacation. I’ve been limiting my carb splurges to small windows, but I’ll still splurge a bit.
