So my wife & I are leaving in 17 days and my wife who is not doing Keto until after we get back thinks that I should introduce carbs the week before we leave. I am 6’10 weigh about 486 and lost 30 lbs my first three weeks. I am on my 3rd week. I am planning on staying on plan as much as possible but I am gonna want to have a treat once a day (I mean dole whips people) So do I need to introduce carbs the week before I leave. My macros and this is doctor approved is 38 net carbs, 233g fat, 188 grams protein.
Going on vacation (Disney World)
6’10’ 486? I had to read that like 3 times for it to sink in. You be a big boy! You’re going to be more of an attraction than peter pans adventure? If you’ve never been there know this. Disney is completely devoid of anything remotely resembling real food. I’m no foodie, and I used to eat pretty much anything, but that was really disappointing. If I were to go there now I’d probably just fast the whole time. Just one mans opinion of course.
Hey John. My opinion - no need to eat carbs beforehand. Is there a reason to think you’ll have trouble with moderately more carbs? I’d say stay on plan as much as you can.
I used to be 600 lbs… My lowest weight ive been is 407 but I could never crack that 400 number then I got complacent. I took my nephews to a ball game the other night and I had 2 sips of their snow cone and I felt like I was going to die…
That’s a good sign actually. You’ll do fine at Disney and you’ll have a good time, other than trying to fit 6’10” into the it’s a small world boat.
Yeah this is my 3rd time in the last 2 years. We bought into DVC so we plan on going there for a lifetime. Yeah I get really uncomfortable on boat rides because of the length of my legs
Disney World is my favorite place! And I love the food and treats there - maybe not inside the parks so much (Nutella waffles ) but the O’hana dinner at the Poly and The California Grill are great! There are plenty of others but you just have to do your research and choose the right places. If I were you (so lucky!) I’d enjoy Disney to the fullest and fast/get back on track when you got back (https://disney.urbantastebud.com/best-disney-snacks-desserts-treats-sweets/) I’d be working my way down this kind of list
But I don’t think you’d need to work in carbs before - maybe not being used to them will keep you from going too crazy.
Have fun!
Yeah we have the dining plan and staying at the Poly. I am gonna stay on plan as much as possible because I am going to be doing vlogs and dining reviews for staying on plan at Disney.
I’d love to read them!
I have never been keto at Disney, but I am a total Disney nerd & I research for months and plan out our trips down to the minute we’ve been 10 times so far! Next trip is either January or March (now we have to plan around the school and sports of 7 kids). I think we have some soccer tournament there in one of those months…and of course we’ll stay an extra week!
Yeah I have lots of things planned. We have 3 trips planned in the next 10 months
Taking my grown kids (20 and 26) and wife in January. 3 keto and one carbie. We did some research and it seems like we can stay keto. Also 26 year old and I can ship meals no problem because we do IF anyway.
peopleschoice makes some great carb free beef jerky and adapt makes a coffee additive that is all fat. Also pork rinds are good but bulky.
- https://peopleschoicebeefjerky.com/ make sure to check the flavors first for carbs

Have a lot of fun.
I live 70 miles away from DW but haven’t been in a long time.
There used to be food carts that famously had smoked turkey legs that were pretty low carb. These showed up easily: https://amazingribs.com/tested-recipes/turkey-recipes/disney-style-smoked-turkey-legs-recipe
Brined with a little sugar in the water, but that doesn’t soak into the meat, so you could pull the skin off if you insisted on getting zero carb.
Ironically, I find eating in Disney completely doable because I’m out of my home element and comforts/foods there. I sometimes even use a Disney trip to kickstart entering ketosis (weird, I know.)
I wouldn’t say that Disney is devoid of real food - you just need to know where to look. The buffets usually have 2-3 low-carb/decent options like eggs, salads, sausage, etc. that you can load up on. Most restaurants have plenty of dinner options that work well, but I agree the quick-service stuff is limited to bunless burgers and stuff like that, which is not great. Also, if you’re staying in a place that has a fridge like the DVC locations, each resort has a market with things like eggs, cheese, etc. that I use for snacks, etc. (However, if you have just a hotel-style room, this is more challenging.)
But, alas, I agree that fasting or meal-skipping is probably a good Disney strategy. Takes the pressure off breakfast and lunch and allows me to look forward to a nice dinner in the evening, which is much easier to do and stay on plan.
My first post on the ketogenic forums and I am happy it is Disney related. We are complete Disney nerds. DVC owners as well (AKLV). This December is our first trip that I am going to plan the same as you. Mostly on plan with one exception of a Dole Whip (cause it is vacation in a cup to me). I hopeyou have fun. When you get back I would love to hear about your experiences, if you thought it was hard while you were there. I think most places should be easy to pick something or have something modified at the restaurants. Hope you have a magical vacation!! - Kim
How was the trip and the outcome.
We are on our way home from Disneyland and I am scared to get on the scale when I get home. I was anything and everything but keto. Even stopped IF the last couple if days. Would love to here how you did quik you were there and after.
