Going on cruise- breaking keto for a week

(S.M.) #1

Hi,

I am wanting to break the keto diet while on the cruise, so I’m debating if I should slowly introduce some carbs before the cruise. I am not planning to break it fully. I still will substitute some things at meal times but I do want a pina colada and etc lol. Any advice? I have been on keto for 7 weeks and I am five pounds from my ideal weight :slightly_smiling_face:

No judgements, but help me understand why a going cruise would make you think of changing up your low-carb way of eating? I haven’t found a situation yet, in 16 months, included extended periods of vacation and compromised eating that would require I give up low-carb.

Make it a creative opportunity! “Keto This Cruise!” Might make an interesting reality tv show…

It’s more for the fruity drinks possibly some bread. Liquor hits you hard on keto so I know I’m going to need some glycogen to help block the liquor. I figured as a reward to being very close to my goal. I’m going back on the keto when I get back.

Simple solution

Just drink the Escargot Garlic Butter Sauce on the buffet meals

You Will make it just fine then
Thank me later

About 6 weeks into our keto journey we went on a cruise. We didn’t want the hassle of trying to figure out what was keto, so we had whatever we wanted for that week. My biggest concern was that it would derail us, but we got right back to keto as soon as we stepped off the plane.

Things we learned for us: we could go back to keto. We each gained about 7 pounds during that week and lost it within 5 days of being back. It was very encouraging that we could indulge for a special occasion but get right back to it.

However, I found that all the pain relief (chronic back issues and joint pain) I had found through keto went poof within a day or two of SAD eating. By the end of the cruise I really didn’t want to walk the length of the ship to do anything due to joint pain. It was eye opening to say the least.

Specific to your question, we did not introduce carbs ahead of time. We’re not big drinkers generally and weren’t on the cruise either, so not sure how much early carb intro would help. My guess is that drinking those carbs may not hit you as hard if your other meals are more keto. YMMV.

Have fun on the cruise! We’re looking forward to our next one.

When we went on a cruise I kept to very low carbing (imposs to say whether I stayed keto, since I couldn’t do the proper calcs and I didn’t have a ketone meter with me), but it was surprisingly easy to avoid the big carbs.

What was interesting was that while I gained no weight whatsoever, and had no obvious digestive, sleep or other consequences, I did get the old joint pains back, and my energy levels dipped tremendously.

Which led to me deciding that I would have enjoyed the cruise MORE if I had been more strict with my eating. Yes, it would have been a minor inconvenience at the table, but it would have meant I enjoyed the trips, stairs, and other activities with a sharper brain, more endurance and less discomfort.

Each to their own, I guess.

I get wanting to kick back with liquor. I enjoy a shot of bourbon with my diet ginger ale every night, and my WoE remains intact. I know the “fruity” liquor drinks are just a serpent’s tempting and bartenders add sugar above the squirt of lemon, lime, or whatever. Drinking that will game my body to want more than I need. As for bread, just think of what @richard called bread and other carbs; “packing material.” It makes it easier to skip when you see that loaf of bread in the same light as packing peanuts.

You may find you’ll enjoy the cruise more as a keto-er?

I think I’m going to stick to more keto friendly meals and just enjoy my drinks… I’m more a wine drinker and I do love bloody Mary’s. Just something about a cruise and daiquiris.

RESIST!

You’ll be fine. It’s impossible to readapt back into lipogenesis in so short of a time. That would require a complete recompensation of glycogen, then eating enough carbs to chronically overcompensate. If anything, your cruise will be a metabolic positive. Expect to gain some water and glycogen weight, but it will be gone a week or so after you get back.

Thanks! I’m more worried of feeling sick with the introduction of carbs, so I was wondering if I should introduce carbs here and there before going on the cruise.

I wouldn’t. Problem carbs are usually carbs that have given people trouble all their lives, probably the most common are grains, beans and dairy. If you have any specific issues with a specific type I’d avoid it,or keep amounts to a minimum. The effects seem to be magnified after long periods without them.

For example, my problem is grains, especially high gluten items. If I all of a sudden eat a large amount I’ll be bloated, miserable, and spend time on the toilet.

Watch out for Keto hangovers! They may make you jump overboard to end the misery.

We are Going on a cruise in two weeks also. Enjoy the sun and have fun
