Goal weight?

(Trudy) #1

Just looking for input from fellow Keto peeps. I have been Keto since mid March, 30 plus kg down with my target weight 10kg away. I came up with my target weight as it is just in the “normal” BMI for my height.

My question is…Do I need a target weight? If I continue to eat Keto intuitively will my body naturally find it’s own target and just stay put? If that is the case I am hoping it is slightly less than I am now but physically I can do the activities I want at this body weight, unlike when I was 111kg.

Any suggestions welcome.

What is your sex, age, height and body type? I usually don’t go by weight but how I look and feel. BMI is also a poor indicator if you are muscular. I prefer body fat percentage. 10-20% looks ideal for men and 15-30% for women.

Female, 47yrs and planning on eating Keto for the rest of my life. I guess I hope my body will know when it is at its healthiest and just stop losing weight.

It depends so much on your body composition. My sister and I are around the same height, 5-1. She weighs 126, I weigh 127. Yet she can wear size 4 pants, while I wear an 8. She has more of a straight up and down figure, with smaller hips and no butt. I’m the opposite. And I have a chest and she… doesn’t. Yet the scale says we weigh the same! I’d also say she has more muscle than I do. She’s more of a mesomorph, I’m more of an ectomorph. It really makes a difference!

I think it’s funny how many of us try to mimic how our ancestors used to eat and at the same time establishing a “goal” weight. I’m picturing a naked dude running after a deer, picking ripe fruit off a tree, and digging for grubs, and in between those activities, looking in a mirror lake at himself thinking just a few more pounds off here or there and I’ll be good to go. Why stuff like this runs through my head I don’t know but it struck me as funny. Btw I also have a goal weight. I’m 2.2 lbs away from it and I’m not sure where I’ll go once I get there. Find a mirror lake and assess?

My wife actually asked me this very same question just last week. I told her I didn’t really have one. Just thought when I get there, I’ll know.

A good guide I have seen is to aim for a waist measurement that is 50% or less of your height. Not sure how achievable this would be for some people though. I’ve gone from 44 inches to 38 so far. Aiming for 34 but we’ll see.

Been doing Keto little over a year.

My “phinney weight” seems to be 2lbs over what i had thought should be my “goal” weight.

It’s probably good for us not to get worked up about a couple pounds. :grinning:

The more I think of this WOE as forever I figure I will just stop losing weight when my body is happy.

I had a goal of 126lbs when I first set out to lose fat, now I hover around 118lbs but it’s creeping up as I build muscle. Don’t really have any goal in mind either, just want to feel as good as I can and be as happy as I can.

V1ncentt, I’m a bit new to Keto and just checked out Phinney weight. I’m not the only one giving up on a goal weight number. Thanks for that info :grinning:

I like the Phinney Weight concept. When I was in my 20s, I was around 165 pounds, with much, much more muscle mass than I have now (I am a former pseudo-bodybuilder, meaning I tried to be a bodybuilder, then realized I didn’t have the genetics). I’m about 200 pounds now, and for me to lose weight is quite a challenge. I need to fast quite a bit and still maintain keto when not fasting. I have built more muscle and lost weight (know by DEXA scans) over the last year or so, but it’s challenging, especially being 50+. Regardless, I’d like to lose maybe 20 more pounds and one pants size (36 to 34 inches). Then I’d just hang out there, I think.

After 4.5 years of low carb/keto, I now set my goals to be mainly fast when I can, change it up (shorter term, longer term fasts, eating a lot sometimes, etc.), keep keto as much as I can, and see what happens. The weight goal is still there, it’s just health before weight now.

Yup Your body is not losing weight because of keto. It is right-sizing because it is, finally, in charge of its owndestiny. If you were underweight, my guess is that keto would allow your body to gain weight.

Trust millions of years of evolution. It knows. You may not like where it stops, but the body most likely will go where it thinks is right.

I am hoping that my body will keep losing weight (over time) until I am at the best weight I should be at. I know I have more then 120 pounds to go for this to happen, but the exact number I am not sure of. I know I want to be Keto for life, and wish I had of found out about Keto years ago, and saved myself years of pain and yoyo dieting.

When is the best time to plant a tree? 20 years ago
When is the 2nd best time to plant a tree? Now

Good Point! At least we are all on the right track now =).
