GMO hype

Boy I sure opened up a big rabbit hole. Thanks for all of your input @DBatting.

It really ruffles my feathers when people trash GMO’s. I see in the real world all of the good they have done.

Full confession: I am a bit of a climate change denier. I have no doubt that humans have had an impact on the environment, however I believe we are much kinder to mother earth than we were say 50-100 years ago. (Except maybe some of the 3rd world countries and China) I think we should continue to take “reasonable” steps to be cleaner and more efficient.

That being said the earth’s climate has been in flux since the beginning and I believe it is a bit egotistical of man to think we have complete control over what can/will happen in the future. I remember back in the 70’s the mother hens were running around claiming the next ice age was upon us and we were all going to starve to death. Next thing you know it’s global warming that will doom us to extinction, Now the narrative has once again been updated to “climate change”. I understand that science evolves but the climate has been changing for eternity. I’m not buying that man in our 200 years of indutrialization has had that much of an impact.

You can’t really say that there would be no progress in hybridization or selective breeding in agriculture in the absence of genetic splicing or flipping the expressive switches. Adaptation is kind of required when we try something new because it needs to fit well enough to not disrupt established ecology. What happens if we create something that is bug proof, and as a result all the birds and bats starve to death. 10 out of 10 for short term production, but minus several million for survival of our species.
The argument that we have been able to stay on top of supply is kind of self defeating as well since we toss out about half of our food in this country. Abundance creates a reckless attitude toward nutrition and procreation. Two things that should have much more consideration than current levels.

I’m going to lock the topic. Climate change is off topic, and GMO barely on topic and I think we’ve had a reasonable exploration on the pros and cons of that.
