Glycine supplementation re: lastest podcast

(G. Andrew Duthie) #81

I’m taking 8-18g of glycine daily (1-3 servings of 5g during the day, and 3g before bed). Haven’t seen any change in need for magnesium or other electrolytes. Also not seeing any issues with ketosis. I use a cheap breath meter, and I’m currently at 0.7g/l. There may well be an effect, but if so, it’s pretty modest, IMO. Of course, n=1, so might be different for each person.

Thank you! What’s your opinion on its effects on autophagy?

(G. Andrew Duthie) #83

No idea, really.

There’s a lot of uncertainty around what does it doesn’t affect autophagy, so if that’s the (or a main) goal of fasting for you, it might make sense to avoid it (glycine) if you’re uncertain.

Follow up after 2 weeks in… I have gotten rid of 5cm from around my hips. Scales weight, waist measurement is the same.
I am gobsmacked. My hips have been the hardest thing to reduce.

Yay for Richard’s tooth!

I personally haven’t been tested, but I suspect I have it, based on how different I feel now supplementing both methyl folate and methyl B-12. I intend to get tested in the next few months to find out for sure.

I was just tested with the MTHFR (C66777T) T/T / I also am hypothyroid. The antibody tests came back fine, TSH 3.5, Creatine 0.7, Glucose 73, T4 free 1.01, T3 free 2.2, my NMD told me I should take 5mg of L-methyfolate or metafolun and lots of fishoil. I am also on nature thyroid. Based on this forum and researchyou have done and what I am taking L-Carnatine and Glycine - but since I am T/T would like to know your thoughts… My dad passed at 72 massive heart attack. Been doing keto since May 2018 and IF 36 to 48 hours 2 to 3 times a week. Lost 13 lbs so far - 5’4” female at 154 lbs. I watched the videos and threw out my multivitamin due folic acid and got a better one. Asked the NMD for Choline and she said I could get that from my food…

Thank you!

I am a raging insomniac, and I use a TON of glycine every night to try to sleep (3000 mg per night and it does help!). It hasn’t affected my ketosis at all. When I wake up, I’m always still in ketosis at the same levels that I was at before I started the glycine (from 1.2-1.6 usually). My blood sugar has gone up though, so I’m wondering if glycine raises blood sugar? Does anyone know if that’s possible? It’s not a problem, since my blood sugar is good. But it used to be always in the low 70’s and now it’s in the low 80’s. Still, I’m sleeping a little better, so that’s always good.

I’ll have to do some research (and maybe some additional glucose and ketone testing on myself). Just offhand, I’d say that since glycine is an amino acid/ protein, it can affect blood sugar in large enough amounts. I wouldn’t think that 3000 mg/ 3 grams would be very significant.

Here’s what I found with a quick google search. Be aware I only skimmed these articles. I’ll have more time later to do some more reading.

I’m diabetic and this podcast is very interesting. I will be experimenting with this to see how glycine before meal affects my blood glucose levels.

C677T homozygous here. Looking for thoughts on supplementing Betaine (aka Trimethylglycine) instead of glycine? The thought is to supplement Betaine the keep the BHMT pathway rolling. Also, the Betaine generates glycine 1:1 at the end of the pathway, so that wouldn’t hurt??? Certainly will keeping eating the connective tissue/ skin etc but this seems like an effective way to supply methyl donors and glycine. Looking at 3000mg/day.

Thoughts?

You could try it and watch to see how biomarkers like homocysteine respond. Might also check relevant SNPs of betaine metabolism such as rs617219. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4740183/

Here’s an excerpt on methylation related symptoms from Chris Masterjohn’s “testing nutritional status cheatsheet”:

Signs and Symptoms of Deficient Methylation: Fatty liver disease, neural tube birth defects,
elevated homocysteine and associated cardiovascular risk, fatigue, poor exercise capacity,
histamine intolerance, difficulty ignoring negative thoughts and thought patterns, depression,
anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, histamine intolerance, inability to adequately eliminate
arsenic, inability to properly utilize selenium or excrete excess selenium. Severe deficiencies in
methylation could contribute to deficiencies of zinc, copper, and perhaps other positively
charged minerals. As with excessive methylation, possibly cancer.

Signs and Symptoms of Excessive Methylation: Generally understudied with lower
confidence compared to undermethylation. Among the best supported: distractibility, difficulty
focusing, impulsivity, and substance abuse. More speculative: difficulty breaking free from
psychological conditioning, difficulty falling asleep or poor quality sleep, and faster aging skin.
As with deficient methylation, possibly cancer.

I have no idea about glycine and BGL BUT I have sleep issues. My sleep cycle goes way off kilter very easily. I use melatonin for that, works well for me and it does nothing to my BGL.
I also have to supplement with active forms of B vitamins. I’ve been advised to take them 1 hour post caffein as it blocks their absorbtion.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. Plan to recheck homocysteine in May.

It has been super fun getting the SNPs and re-learning all the biochem. I loved biochem 25 years ago in college. Now it’s even more interesting with the personal ties and the possible modifications. I am very curious about how the bio markers will change with time.

I know this is an old post but the wife is wanting a sweet treat for her super strict keto program. I thought of glycine as a means of making cream cheese and HWC with vanilla and glycine dessert-y enough. Of course there is this which indicates a modest insulin increase sans glucose. Your thought please should you see this?
