Glycine Supplement recommendations - for sleep

#1

Well my ears pricked up when @richard talked about the sleep benefit some of you have noticed. I could really do with some help in this department! I really do NOT need my ketones to go any higher but sleep I really do need at a decent hour. I am like Richard in this respect and a night owl.

So I am heading to Amazon to see what is available but thought you lot would be the best place to start as I am sure there will be multiple options available.

Thanks

I bought mine from ‘bulk powders’ - they’re in the UK and sell on amazon - I get my psyllium husk from them and it’s always been very reliable.

Ah yes I have ordered form them before and happen to be heading to the UK tomorrow so might order some so I can bring it back. Thanks. Is it just called glycine powder?

This is the one I got - it’s fine crystals rather than powder - very much like castor sugar in consistency.
The flavour is pretty good too - it’s is sweet with a slightly sherbet flavour.
I’ve tried it in coffee and it’s a bit sweet - I like a creamy, bitter hit in the morning.
However, I’ve found mixing it in water with some lemon juice works well because then it doesn’t taste sweet - and I get a rather pleasant lemony drink for when I’m working out.
It hasn’t harmed my ketosis - in fact, I think I might have had a slight bump in my ketones and I think it might have helped with deep sleep too.

Awesome, thank you so much. I really do not need a bump in ketones and could do without it TBH but the sleep impact would be amazing. Going to order some. Thanks for your help.

No bother - you’re welcome.
I don’t know that I needed a bump either - but I’ll happily take one! :sunglasses:

Well mine were at 5 this morning and I tend to get a bit jittery over 4 so…

Oh right - er wow!
I pootle in the 0.3 - 0.8 range mostly - but I eat a lot of veggies and sneak some fruit in.
Yeah - you probably don’t need a bump! :joy:

Same here. Im always looking to improve my sleep since its been pretty crappy what with nighttime hot flashes (oh the joys of getting older). I just ordered some through Amazon from NOW. I have several of their products so thought I would stick with their glycine powder. Should be here tomorrow so we shall see. I am a bit confused as the best time to supplement with it though. Another thread I read that it may give you a bit of a wired feeling so it doesn’t sound like it would be good to take before bed but also read in the same thread that it helps with sleep. I guess it will be a bit of self experimentation to see what works for me!

some people report it sends them to sleep - some wired. I have it in the morning and I definitely feel a wee perk from it. But I seem to be getting better sleep hours later.

The first time I took some was after lunch and I definitely felt a bit wired - it was as if I’d had a coffee - which I don’t do after my morning brew. However, it didn’t linger at all like coffee does - so that wire seems to have a much shorter half-life than caffeine.

I am going to try before bed in a cocoa to experiment but I certainly like it for a sports drink in the morning.

Being that this is sweet, does it have a sweetener type reaction on BG and insulin?

I have a question- are all of you using it in the powdered form? Anyone taking it in capsules?
I’ve just read it is a little sweet, so do you use it as a sweetener in coffee and then, how much would you take?
I am super intrigued but when I went to the heath food store today to check, they did not carry it.
I am unsure as to what to order but I could sure use a bump in ketones AND better sleep!!
That would be soo amazing…

Yes, powdered form. This is what I’ve been (occasionally) using:

I do a lot of blood ketone measurements. I haven’t seen a noticeable increase in measured blood ketones from using glycine. If anything, I may have seen a decrease after consuming it. (It’s hard to say due to variance in back-to-back readings using the keto mojo meter. However, some things - like consuming coconut oil or MCT oil - definitely do increase blood ketones.)

I haven’t really seen improved sleep with glycine either.

I still have a lot of glycine powder left. When I finally use it up, I won’t be ordering it again.
