Anyone have a good chart of the glycemic index that includes proteins? Everyone that I search for just has cake cookies popcorn etc. on it
Glycemic chart of keto foods
The glycemic index of proteins will in general be tiny unless you include things like power bars that are more sugar and starch than protein.
No I’ve seen it on a Dr Berg video. And it was pretty detailed on how each one effects blood sugar. Just can’t find it.
I suspect you saw something on the insulin index of proteins which can be significant.
I don’t know what he put up but it showed values 1-100 and beef was like 55 eggs were 20 etc. It sure looked like a GI chart to me.
Thanks for the input guys
Sounds like insulin index numbers to me. Protein stimulates insulin which lowers blood sugar and glucagon which raises blood sugar to counter balance the insulin and typically results in minimal impact on blood sugar. Trying to create a glycemic index of protein would be pointless because the glycemic impact is going to be largely due to factors like ones insulin sensitivity and liver glycogen level.
Beware of the “insulin” index, because it does not take into account the concomitant glucagon release that happens when you eat protein, but not when you eat carbs. You should watch Ben Bikeman’s Low Carb Breck 2018 talk about how very different are keto folks’ insulin reaction to protein compared with sugar-heads!
So true, Nick - that is one great video! I was just thinking about it on the “does excess protein turn into sugar” thread. There is a world of difference how we react to protein, depending on the amount of carbohydrates we’re eating.
