Getting into Ketosis Faster

(Erika Knollenberg) #1

Does anyone recommend a product that helps them get into ketosis faster? I bought a product that was supposed to and I’m not getting into ketosis any faster than I ordinarily would without it.

Thanks!

The way to get into ketosis is to stop eating carbohydrate. As soon as the extra glucose in your body is gone, your liver will get busy making ketones. You can take ketone supplements, but although your blood meter will show them circulating, that’s not the same as being in the metabolic state called “nutritional ketosis.” The only way to achieve that is to eat a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet.

Yes, I’m aware of that. I get into ketosis, but it takes over a week to get up to 1.5

I read somewhere, and I can’t remember where, a girl was recommending a product that put her into ketosis the very next day. Where she may have a cheat meal or an accidental cheat, and taking this puts here right back into ketosis without missing a beat.

I get tired of one meal every now and then setting me back an entire week.

She was likely being mislead. You can take exogenous ketones and it will make you get a nice dark pee stick result, but she wasn’t actually burning any fat to make those ketones so it’s completely pointless from the perspective of weight loss.

As long as your liver is producing ketone bodies at all, you are fine. Dr. Phinney says that he and Prof. Volek picked 0.5 mmol/dL as the level of serum β-hydroxybutyrate, because it’s at that level that the benefits of ketosis start to become obvious. But more BOHB in the bloodstream isn’t necessarily any better, and some very well fat-adapted athletes never show as high a level as 0.5.

Remember also that the blood ketones we measure are ketones that haven’t been used yet, and the breath and urine meters measure only wastage. The actual reading isn’t nearly as important as your metabolic healing, in any case.

That^^^

I have noticed though that I don’t lose weight and even can slowly gain when my ketones measure .5 while I consistently lose weight at 6 mmol. So for me at least there is a definite weight loss benefit to higher ketone values.

No products are needed, just limit your carb intake to below 20g.

Exogenous ketones will show ketones in your blood, but they don’t put you in ketosis. Ketone production is a byproduct of your body burning its fat stores which doesn’t happen with ketones from a bottle, all you’ll get is expensive pee.

Everyone, thank you for your explanations. That is very helpful to know. I use a blood meter, btw.

Your body can store up to 48 hours worth of glucose (glycogen) in the muscles and liver.

Stop eating carbs (or stay below 20g), wait a couple of days, it’ll all burn off, your body starts to burn it’s own stored fat.

If you want to enter ketosis faster then exercise the glycogen off.

As Paul said external ketones will circulate in the blood but you won’t be burning your own fat.

For keto - you need to think in terns of week, months, years - not hours or days or you will be disappointed. Keto is not a quick fix.

Please don’t.
It took me a year to believe I was finally in ketosis. I took my sweet time and I was probably fat adapted far before that and waiting one full year before weighing myself again. Don’t rush. Things will come with time. Be confident in yourself and believe in what you have to do (it should be towards a goal for better health in general not to be ketogenic exclusively). Take care of yourself! Sending you good vibes.

How long have you been staying strict on a keto plan? Some people who have lost all the weight they wanted and are maintaining seem to be able to go “off plan” occasionally without missing a beat. But for those of us who still have weight to lose or have special health issues, having a “cheat meal” is probably not worth it. It might be best to focus on the keto foods you absolutely love (some can be pricey!) and treat yourself to a great keto meal once in a while like prime beef, crab legs, lobster, etc.

The farther away you get from your old carby favorites, the less you will miss them. I was a candy freak. Last week I took out of town friends to the local mind-blowing candy store and had absolutely NO temptation or visceral response to any of it. I enjoyed looking at it like they were toys or cute inedible items. That day will come for you too!

This is interesting because I’ve done keto a few times and I’ve NEVER reached a point where I don’t crave sweets. I would welcome a cinnamon roll, a snickers bar, or a donut anytime!

“I’ve done keto a few times and I’ve NEVER reached a point where I don’t crave sweets.”
While you have “done keto a few times” it might not have been strict enough for long enough to stamp out your cravings for sweets. Cravings for sweets and carbs can be a sure sign of too many carbs in your “keto” plan. Especially if NET carbs are being used instead of TOTAL carbs and commercially prepared “Keto” or “low carb” bars, shakes, fat bombs, desserts & sweets are being used regularly. Some people who are hardcore sugar addicts are even triggered by sugarless gum or certain sweeteners, the sight of sweets, talk about sweets or the smell of sweets. I know, I am a recovering massive sugar addict. Best wishes to you!
