Getting Enough Omega 6?

#1

Does anybody worry that they’re not getting enough omega 6? I’m aware that ‘out there’ among the SAD eaters too much omega 6 is a problem but according to Cronometer I’m not getting nearly enough. My 7 day average is 4.7 grams omega 6 to 1.5 grams omega 3 so my ratios are OK but should I be increasing my 6’s?

This is quite funny out of context

But seriously - I’m a big fan of Cronometer for tracking, but it’s not really setup for people who eat like us. Of course, the ratios will still hold.

I have the opposite problem. I am not a big fish fan - and so according to Chronometer, my Omega 3 to 6 is way out of whack. It only normalizes when I eat Marie’s blue cheese dressing, olive oil does not help. And nuts, nuts are a two-edged sword. I am considering taking a fish oil supplement to get more Omega 3’s. To me, it seems like Omega 6’s are everywhere.

We have to agree to disagree. The Omega 6/3 ratio is very important.

(Running from stupidity) #5

Not saying that at all. Cronometer tells me all the time I’m having too much of something or not enough of another, and that makes sense given I’m not a carb eater.

#6

There is no hiding anything from Cronometer :astonished:

Most of what I could find said “we know it’s (omega 6) essential but we don’t know how much is essential”. Given previous form it’s probably best the experts don’t make any recommendations I suppose.

I don’t love most of the oily fishes either! I use tinned salmon with various add ins (pesto, curry paste etc…) to make fish cakes & mash brisling sardines with dijon & just choke them down. I feel virtuous yet queasy

I’m allergic to fish and worry more about how hard it is for me to get omega 3s.

There are supplements that vegans take - not quite sure what they’re about but I think they’re more bioavailable than dietary plant sources.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #10

I’ve tried everything, walnuts, etc. Fish is the only thing that creates a good balance. I’ve had fish oil capsules in the past that were not too bad. Funny story - I got brainwashed into trying krill oil tablets - because they are supposed to be the most beneficial. OMG! This goes way beyond fish burps. I was driving with my daughter and she said: “Mom, what the hell?” as she was rolling down the windows. Ten times worse than ketone breath! Totally scared off all fish oil supplements for the moment. But, the only thing other than fish that works is Marie’s dressing - it features non GMO soybean oil, and when I get two tablespoons of that my ratios are fine. Haven’t figured that one out yet. Not crazy about the soybean oil.

I gave up krill oil & the resultant krill burps when I started force feeding myself sardines - odious though they are they don’t make me burp!

(Empress of the Unexpected) #12

Don’t think I could do that…… Brave soul!

#13

I smash up 1/2 a tin of the little brisling ones with a good squeeze of lemon & a good teaspoon of dijon mustard, hold my nose & down the hatch they go. I follow them with food I actually like so the memory fades fast  Two tins a week & I get the weekend off!

Isn’t it meant to be omega 6 that’s plentiful and omega 3 that’s more difficult to get? Omega 9 plays a role too…

#15

Yeah omega 6 is everywhere so I don’t doubt I could get more in my diet - just wondering if I need to or if the lower limit set by cronometer is bunk.

(Allie) #16

From what I know it’s that ratio that matters more than the actual amounts, supposedly 4:1 but I’d be surprised if there’s any research on people who are keto rather than SAD.

#17

Well I’m OK on the ratios but still nowhere near the apparent requirement of 12 gm omega 6 per day - I’m happy enough to bump up my walnut & almond intake but then I’d have to bump up my sardine intake (gak) to keep my ratios happy! I seem healthy enough so maybe I’ll just leave it be…

I guess I’m lucky in the Omega 3 department. Love salmon, smoked salmon, sardines, anchovies and smoked mackerel. I work at a university that has a pretty nice dinning hall and they have smoked salmon available all day.

(Hyperbole- best thing in the universe!) #19

I’m the same with salmon, sardines and mackerel… I’ve just inherited a can of anchovies from a friend who moved out of the country… not sure what to do with them.

They are suppose to be very healthy for you. Read some amazing results in Dr Boz’s book where her mother ate them daily after foot surgery, where her bones were like mush, and they healed remarkably well!
Alas I can’t even try them due to my allergy.
