Getting enough calories

(Tyler) #1

I’ve been having a problem for the past week with eating enough calories. I’d get around 1000 calories and would be completely full and couldn’t eat any more. That in itself has been hard for me to believe considering only 2 months ago before starting Keto I could eat 5-6000 a day with ease. I’ve been worried that such a low calorie count every day would stall my weight loss but yesterday I found the solution here in the forums. The answer for me was my morning cup of coffee.

Hi @Relic,

You might find that 1454 calories daily slows your metabolism (to end up stalling weight loss) just like 1000 does (it just slows it slower).

What is supposed to happen on Keto is that you eat (to satiety) when hungry and not eat when not hungry.

This avoids the consistent daily input that the body might view as the new normal for the food environment and try to slow down for.

According to this logic - some days at 2000 and some days at 1000 would avoid slowdown with your overall calorie intake unchanged.

Another thing you might think about is that those same 454 calories could be a plate of bacon and eggs.

Butter coffee at 454 calories might better fit into a Keto diet of someone on maintenance at 2500 calories - finding they need more clean fat to up to closer to 3000.

While trying to lose weight - making a single butter coffee a third of your calories might not be best for satiation (although it is a lot easier to make than a full breakfast).

Just eat to satiety. If your trying to lose fat and your body is satisfied this week at 1000 calories it’s absolutely fine. Better than fine. It means that your body is happily chewing away at its own body fat. Making yourself drink fat just prevents body fat losses. You are literally filling up a tank while it is emptying while simultaneously wanting to empty it.

I appreciate all the input. I will make sure to “keep my body guessing” as the saying goes. I’ve never been a breakfast eater as I just can’t bring myself to eat until after I’ve been awake and moving for 2 to 3 hours. I’m sure I can’t get the results that I need from 1000 calories a day so I will definitely do what I can to increase that for most days. No way I would have ever believed that I’d be full and satisfied with that just 2 months ago.

My calorie intake is all over the map. Starting keto it was 3000-4000 calories daily for a few weeks. Then it went down to less than 2000 daily for a couple weeks. I’ve had multiple 0 calorie days mixed with low calorie days and then a week later my body decides it’s time to eat a few days really high. Once you nail down the “eat when you’re actually hungry and not when you aren’t,” things change quite a bit in regards to daily caloric intakes. Humans like to force control over this but, letting the body control it instead is liberating.
