Getting disheartened

(Ray) #1

Plateued at stone and a half. Let go a little at the weekend as I was away at a wedding. Put on a couple of pounds.
I still cheat a bit at bed time with my milk habit which I know I shouldn’t do. I’m basically ally one meal a day and bed time milk.
Weight loss stalled, energy levels low. Finding that I have some aches and pains, bad wrist for the last few years which I can tolerate but now seems much worse. A few general aches and pains. What’s going on
More bloated than ever and full of wind

Any advice welcomed

Are you eating enough?

As for the bloating maybe try cutting out the milk just for a week and see if it gets better…

I fear I may have problems with dairy as wind has returned after about a year without it but luckily a lot less “fragrant” than in the bad old days!

However I’m not giving up coffee and I hate it black so my cream will remain along with the occasional gust.

There are several possibilities. What do you typically eat?

If you eat plants, some of them contain antinutrients that may cause a stall (lectins, oxalates, isoflavones and more). If you eat carnivore, that may be a problem too – some people don’t get enough fat on carnivore (70% of the calories from fat). For other people protein will work almost like carbs in their body, causing a lot of glucogenesis (conversion of protein to glucose), even though this seems to be rare.

So basically let us know what you’re eating, and we can suggest changes.

For me, I have to cut out nearly all dairy products if I want to lose weight. I’m OK with some butter and cream for my coffee, but no cheese, mascarpone or creme fraiche for me. Just had a 3 month sta;; because I started eating more dairy. Maybe your milk habit is responsible for the stall? I sometimes treat myself to some inulin, a soluble fiber that has no calories but tastes nice. Or replace the milk with a fat bomb like home made chocolate (containing mostly of cacao butter).

I also have to eat a low oxalate diet.

I basically eat lots of bacon, eggs, cheese, steak burgers, fish and chicken usually breaded, bad I know. I drizzle olive oil, butter etc on meals too and when I cook I use lard where possible. I have coffee with cream and butter throughout the day. Typically one meal a day at 5pm

Maybe try keeping a food diary for a week listing and weighing everything you ingest?
Then you’ll see exactly how much you are eating and macros.
It’s a pain but will give you some real data and then you can tweak your diet as per necessary.
You may find your OMAD doesn’t have enough food, you might find your carbs are higher than you think but without the data you’ll never know.

It’s impossible to say from these. If I ate like you, I would seriously overeat due to all that fat. I need to minimize my added fat even for proper maintenance, it doesn’t satiate me at all and my calories go overboard. I have fatty enough protein sources and those are quite satiating.
But as others wrote, there are so many possible reasons…
Some people massively overeat on OMAD, by the way but you don’t do OMAD due to your fatty coffees. OMAD is getting all your calories in a small window, typically in one hour or something similar. I wouldn’t worry about a few drops of heavy cream especially if it’s only about convenience and fat-loss but people are able to drink a ton of calories.

I suspect dairy. I was a milk and cheese addict too. Loved them. Cut them out experimentally - no more gas, good digestion, lots of weight loss. I am slowly letting some goat and sheep cheeses back in, as well as hard, sharp cheddar. You may have to experiment to see how you do.

Sign up for a free cronometer account and start tracking what you’re eating. Eating once a day AND sprinkled in cheats may have a very different look when laid out in front of you than you think it does. Until you KNOW what you’re really doing it’s near impossible to troubleshoot. LOTS of observational studies over the years on diet failed at their job, but successfully proved one thing… that people are terrible at keeping track mentally of what they eat! It’s fine when your getting results, but when you’re not, not need real info. Dump the milk, stop breading stuff, track.

Milk before bedtime and breaded meats- both not good. The milk will also break your intermittent fast.
so basically you are doing what you are not supposed to do.
If you like breaded meat ( as I do too) try putting pork rinds in a mixer to make them into a consistency of bread crumbs. Then crack an egg in a bowl and mix it with some mayonaise and spices. I use salt and red paprika -but you can make your own spicey version. Then I guess you can fry them, but I put my chicken fingers in the oven and bake them.
And if you want to drink milk at night, then at least make it almond milk. But this will still break your fast and stall weight loss.
I guess in the end we can’t have it all. Even eating Keto involves some sacrifice.

Great suggestions from everyone.

You may want to track your carbs for several days to a week to see how many you are getting in a day. Another suggestion is to cut out the butter coffee throughout the day and eat two good sized meals that comfortably sustain you until the next meal or overnight.

It sounds like you really enjoy milk before bedtime. It you can’t eliminate that, maybe drink a half a cup of heavy cream diluted to your liking in ice water. At least that doesn’t have the carbs that regular milk does.

Thanks for all the advice folks. Some I knew already and some new to me. Just reading through if all carefully.
On a positive my bp is much better in recent weeks than it has been for some years. Will reply properly later once finished work

I have started a food diary today and will track for a week what I eat and try to cut down on the milk by half. I did say in my earlier post that I was also experiencing pain. I am noticing more and more pain each day just now. My wrist is much worse and I’m starting to get pain in my feet and a tingling sensation in my toes. My feet are generally very healthy and look good with no issues of the feet or nails. Been to podiatrist who says they look great and cant see any obvious issues at all.
Some general aches and pains on top all over. Not the most fun
