Getting back onto the narrow path

Hi Guys,

I’m new to this forum. You know what keto-people are like (if anything like me) … can’t get enough of keto-reading! I stumbled across your forum after googling ‘Getting back onto keto after a month off’.

I’ve been on a keto diet since April and had four smooth sailing months (up to end July) during which I lost 20 pounds, which made such a huge difference (weighing in at 134 pounds on my 5 ft 2 frame after the weight loss).

I’ve been a dieter since my early adult years (46 now), Being pear shaped every extra kilo shows on my buttocks and thighs.

Being on the keto plan has been an exciting journey. I’ve never lost so much weight in such a short time and with so little effort! Not being hungry or craving food, is amazing. I just started experimenting with 20:4 fasting when …

… we packed our suitcases, boarded a plane from South Africa to Europe for a month long vacation, the last week which was spent on a newly built cruise ship. I started off very well, either fasting or sticking to keto foods, which was not an easy task, to say the least. I did not cheat for two weeks, but then I had to have some French pastries, Italian gelato, a pizza … :see_no_evil:
The week on the ship was a food nightmare … food was inclusive and pizza, deserts, ice cream, pastries were available freely around every corner and buffets were filled with the most sinful foodstuff!! :grimacing:

We’re departing today, catching our first of three flights in an hour’s time. I started reigning things in yesterday, only eating keto food, but bring a caffeien addict, still having coffee with milk in.

I can’t wait to get hone … I need to get my eating in order and visit my scale to see how much damage has been done!!

I’m so worried that I won’t br able to tackle the eating bull by the horns … I feel quite disapponted in myself …

Has anybody been in a similar position and how difficult did you find the transition? Any advise will be great!

Thanks!!

Hi Samantha. :slightly_smiling_face: There is a huge difference between “going keto” and becoming fat-adapted for the first time, and doing it later after eating substantial carbohydrates for a few weeks or a month. (For me, it’s entirely effortless.) Can’t promise no struggle for you, but once you’re off the cycle of carb-eating and whatever addictive/reinforcing detrimental effects come from it, I think you’ll be fine.

Pretty much every time I go on vacation. Don’t sweat it. Did you have a good time and enjoy the pastries? If you did then that’s great! As long as you, and most of us, realize that we can’t eat that way all the time. Balance. However, with that said, you know your body/brain better than anybody here, so only you can know what your limits are. This happens through trial and error.

Thanks for the support!

I’m not off to a good start … had a chocolate on the overnight flight with dinner last night, followed by some couscous and two buns with the meal …
For breakfast they served sweet yoghurt, a croissant and a pancake with maple syrup, which I ate.

When we landed, I took note of the time and date (10:00, 28/8/2018) on which I hit my keto-reset button!!

Hold thumbs!

The more you practice saying no to the not so good stuff the easier it gets. And the flip side of that is when you do say yes, you will hopefully be more choosy about the food. For example when we were in Seattle in June I knew I’d be eating treats a lot. I did my research beforehand on the best places to go for my old favorites. I found the best bakery, the best chocolatier, etc, etc. It was amazing. It sets the bar even higher moving forward so it’s even easier to not eat as much of a treat or not at all. I was at the state fair this past weekend. Treats? Oh hell yes. One of my favorites had been a chocolate dipped cheesecake. This time around I was more focused on the quality of the chocolate and cheesecake. Two bites in and I’m like why am I eating this. I’ve had way better of both since starting Keto in January. Funny how this is working for me.

They serve the worst carbage on the overnight flights! And hard for me to fast on a 15-hr flight because not enough to do to keep me busy plus I don’t sleep as well in a fasted state and I really need to sleep some to reduce the jet lag.

Last time it was ice cream, rolls, pizza, breakfast sandwiches and pasta. Ugh. And no way to burn off the carbage either.

Good for you for resetting your “keto clock” and getting right back on the horse. You will be back to burning ketones in no time!

For me, Keto is all or nothing and I can’t cheat at all. Not really a diet, but a way of life. More difficult when travelling, but doable if you plan well.
