Gas and bowel movements

(Scott) #1

Been having a weird go with the bowel movements . Over the last say 12 days I seem to have one every 3 days . And not really big ones . But I am on the toilet a few times a day with it feeling like I have to go , especially in my stomach and when I sit on the toilet it’s only gas that comes out

Like you, I don’t move my bowel every day. But I don’t get gas unless I overdo the carbohydrates. I also find that my bowel movements are susceptible to my salt intake: too little makes me constipated, too much makes the stools messy.

I Nevwr go over 20 carbs usually around 16. And I only use salt on my supper . Not a lot but enough and use pink Himalayan salr

Less crap in, less crap out.

Above information is sound. … But I too don’t go regularly, and at times, will go as much as 3 to 5 days in between. But being LCHF can do this for some as well, since we don’t seem to waste as much when not taking in all the carbs as @Shortstuff mentions. But not always, and it can be different for everyone. And as @PaulL mentioned, getting enough salt in does indeed help, as well as getting plenty of water too. - As to gas, I honestly haven’t had hardly any issues since switching over to this WOE over two years now, except here recently. And again, not bad, but when you don’t usually have it, you definitely notice it. And I believe it may have been caused trying out the ‘Rebel’ Ice Cream. I don’t usually even fool with any of that stuff, but decided to try it one night with the Wife and Son, and it was the next few days that followed I noticed getting gassy. And now, I’m back to how it’s usually been.

It was the only thing that I could find that I had added, and that I hadn’t been eating before this. So I have to believe it was the Rebel Ice Cream, so it might have been the amount, or type, of sweetener used? - I say this since your issues could be related to something you’ve eaten, or having regularly?

Work on that man! I was the same way for a LONG time and ignored it because that happens to a lot of people. Was never like that pre keto but bought into a lot of “Eating less waste” mentality. Made sense at the time. Was an issue for years until it kept getting worse and I wound up getting a colonoscopy in my 30’s over it. Doc told me I was an idiot and to get more fiber in my diet, like a LOT more. At the time I though HE was the idiot but also aware of the definition of insanity I had to mentally rule it out. Guess who goes everyday now? Hasn’t been an issue since. We don’t all do ok with the lack of fiber. I’ve got a pocket in my intestine now as a participation prize from all the pushing when I couldn’t go for almost 2yrs!

So you’re probably not even getting HALF the amount that people eating a “normal” diet are supposed to get! Let alone while eating a diet that has a diuretic effect. Start tracking your intake, we NEED more salt, even people that are carb powered need more salt then they get. Not getting optimal salt intake can screw with you way more than you think it can! The Salt Fix is a great book BTW.

Ok thanks. I never ate salt until
On keto except if it was in recipes . I have been at supper putting on meat and veggies . Will try to up it . Is there a salt pill etc . Just hard to get lots of salt

According to the PURE study, and a couple of others that came out around the same time, the healthy range of sodium intake is 4-6 grams/day, which translates to 10-15 grams of table salt (NaCl), which is 2-3 U.S. teaspoons. This amount includes salt already present in food. The healthy range for salt-sensitive hyper-tensives is the same, it’s just that the risk curve is a lot steeper outside the range.

I am not even close to thats . I use salt grinder with three cranks on veggies and maybe one on meat
