Gained weight in the first 2 days of the diet

#1

Hey so I started the keto diet 2 days ago and I actually gained 2 pounds but I don’t understand why. My day is as follows

Breakfast:
Coffee-black
Eggs, avacado, cheddar cheese (just a sprinkle)
Lunch:
Salmon, dark leafy greens, Brussel sprouts
Dinner:
Chicken breast and a veggie
Snacks:
1/2 cup berries
Boiled eggs
Cheese stick
And of course water all day
I don’t eat any carbs or use any type of sweetener. And ideas why I’m gaining?

Can you share a little more about yourself? Female or male body? Age? Starting weight? Are you tracking your macros? Meaning, do you know exactly how much protein, fat, and carbs you are having? Are you in ketosis yet?

Two days in is VERY early… weight fluctuations of just 2 lbs can depend on a TON of factors. The only thing I’m thinking is that you could have surpassed the 20g of carbs with the number of veggies and avocado there (maybe) and it’s possible that your protein is too high, and fat is too low. If you’re depriving your body of carbs and you’re not giving it enough fat- it’s still looking for glucose and might be freaking out. WHERE IS OUR ENERGY!? That’s when it starts to hold on to excess fat because it is worried you might be entering starvation mode.

The foods you listed above contain carbs.

5.5 g carbs for 1/2 medium avocado
2 g carbs for 1 oz brussel sprouts
tbd g carbs for “veggie”
11.7 g carbs for 1 cup strawberries (“berries”?)

Are you using a food tracker similar to MyFitnessPal (MFP)? (One of the items newbies learn early is track all food they eat. This helps give insight into where, and the amount of carbs are “hidden” in foods. As time goes on, it is not as important to track all foods as you gain knowledge about the foods you eat.)

Also when saying what you’re eating make sure to include fats like butter of vegetables etc. From what you posted the only added fat I can see is avocado and you didn’t give many measurements or rough approximations (like 1/2 or 1/4 of an avocado.) I’m fairly new and wouldn’t probably advise anyone on their diet too much at this point but I know if anyone is to help they’ll need more information.

Sorry let my reiterate, I haven’t eaten any pasta or breads…things like that. I used my fitness pal and my macros are like 65% fat, 30% protein, and the rest are carbs.

So first off, one of the biggest things for keto esp early one and when you don’t know your limit keep your carbs at 20g or less net. That is not a target to hit, that is something you want stay away from, so less than is important. That seems to be the limit that works for everyone, you may be higher. Ideally you don’t want to fill that particular tank up, but remain as empty as possible.

Second at two days you have probably not even depleted you glycogen stores, so you are still running on glucose primarily. Depending upon the level of dysfunction in your system you may need up to a week to get to the point were the keytones are kicking in and you notice it. That would depend upon your intake and your expenditure levels, so this is a case were exercise would help. This is were more of your bio will help, if you are lean and young with out any major problems it may only take a few days to become keto adapted and a few weeks to fat adapt. If your are a T2D then it could take longer for everything, more typcally middle aged people about 2 weeks to fully keto adapt and about 8 weeks to become fat adapted reasonably. It was around 2 1/2 and 8 for me and I was obese and 44 male.

You want to increase your fat intake, the prime goal is to hit your protein macro, and then fat until you are full. This will most likely be outside of your macro until the machinery get moving. Once you start this your body will begin a hormonal change and you will see changes, sometimes people gain for a few days its ok don’t worry there is a lot happening and you need to let your body sort it out. Drink lots of water, start to up your salt intake, start thinking about electrolytes, if you have major health issues like high blood pressure, T2D etc now is the time to talk to your Doctor if you have not.

Be patient, if you have questions ask, and keep calm and keto on.

Water and food weight gain is common and based on your meals that’s probably what it is since you appear to be restricting calories.

Based on your meals you consumed 1.5 pounds food and 4.5 pounds water :open_mouth:

It’s also common for bowel movement to be slower on keto :hushed:

The Scale is a misunderstood tool there are few who know how to use it and because of this you will commonly hear that scales lie or they are not accurate which is a myth by people who have not taken the time to learn how to use it and what it’s readings actually mean.

To understand the Scale you have to ‘know YouSelf’, are you weighing in the same state ‘Fasted’ or ‘Feasted’ are you ‘retaining water’ are your ‘bowel movements slow’ have you ‘consumed more or less in weight’ and ‘is your diet consistent or not?’

Through understanding of the Scale and ‘know YourSelf’ I discovered if I weigh daily in the same state and my diet is consistent and I’m not retaining water and my bowel movements are regular I will show weight loss or gain every 48 hrs and I can adjust my diet and fasting regimen which has given me a average weight loss of 12 pounds a month :grinning:

“May the Force (fat adaption) be with you”

IF/EF Keto WOE is Self-Discovery

Good luck and much success in your journey in IF/EF Keto WOE

Weight can fluctuate up to 4 lbs in a day, so 2 pounds is not significant.
Further, you could gain muscle and lose fat and weigh more because of the density of fat vs muscle.
I’d suggest focus on how you’re feeling, make sure you stay under 20g of carbs per day for now, and eat to satiety.

Take measurements as well, it’ll be more accurate in the long run. I do waist, hip, thigh, and arm.

This is so important!!!

I would also measure face, butt, chest, calves and wrist
