Funny and/or Dumb Mistakes We've Made Doing Keto

Never let your significant other make anything for you, without strict instruction.
I asked my husband to make me a shake with powdered greens, almond milk, vanilla extract and a little cocoa powder and MCT. I drank it down and about ten minutes later I was flying about like I was hypomanic. I said to him how much MCT oil did you put in that? He said just s teaspoon. Turns out the bloody eejit had put 5 scoops of powdered greens in instead of one. My body was high on veggies.

Yow. I found a mistake in the last few days. A week ago I got my blood lipids checked. I thought total chol. and LDL were a bit high, at 227 and 157. So I googled ‘what foods to lower your chol. and LDL’ Up came nuts. So the last 3 days, I’ve been eating almonds, cashews and pistachio nuts. Guess what. Flatulence came back.
So I guess copious amounts of nuts are off the menu again.
Reading a book on Carnivore that says, at over age 60, it’s okay to have total chol. and LDL in that range - says you’ll live longer because of those fats. That the trigs to HDL ratio is the much more important number to look at.

When you say you were young at the time, what age are you meaning? I just want to estimate how well I should be doing at 34. I do have two genetic conditions that affect muscle tone and metabolism. So never sure what is a normal metabolic rate or below. I just go on how insulin resistant I appear to be.

Cashews and pistachios are not the best, too carby. Macadamia and pecans would have been better choices.

A few months into keto, my parents had me over and my step-mom was so proud because she had made a fruit salad instead of dessert. I felt terrible telling her I couldn’t eat it. “WHAT KIND OF DIET SAYS YOU CAN’R EAT FRUIT!” She was not impressed. I fished out a few berries and thanked her.

About 2 years ago on one of my other Keto journeys, i fell into the “No sugar added” chocolate trap! I had stumbled into Purdy’s chocolates and my mouth dropped open to see “no sugar added” Chocolate Hazelnut stuffed headgehog chocolates. OMG… this was like Heaven for the Keto’er.

OMG… i spent over 50$ in those babies. With 3 in a package, it was indulgent. I went through 8 packs of 3 in one day!!!

Within an hour… i began having some rumbles in my stomach followed by a few “toots” and then came the cramps. Oh GAWD!!! The cramps!!! I felt like i was in labor pains. I was curled up on the floor wedged between heat packs… my stomached rumbled for hours and ballooned up twice its size. I felt pregnent, I looked pregnent and thought i was going to die… and then in one moment… i realized that my explosive fart was not, in fact, a fart. And there was no going back. No way of holding anything in. And that was it… I spent the rest of the evening sitting on my throne, curled up hugging my knees, sweating as i prayed for God himself to deliver me of such an evil- MALTITOL!!!

I learned 2 important lessons…well 3 actually.

  1. Maltitol is evil…avoid it at all costs
  2. Dont just trust a label that says “no sugar
    added or Keto”
  3. Keto labelled candy can knock you out of
    ketosis. Always check ingridents.
  4. NEVER EVER trust a fart post maltitol
consumption or any other sugar alcohol
    consumption.

In my sheet where I keep stats on macros for various foods, spices are just the worst. First, a lot of things simply have no info at all. Second, most of them deliberately choose a tiny serving size so the labeling laws will let them get away with just saying zero on everything. Third, not all spices are the same – various additives or fillers may exist in some brands.

For example I’ve been using Penzey’s half-sharp paprika – I eat a whole lot of things like chili con carne that use it – for months. I ran out of it last week and I’m irritatingly poor at the moment, so I couldn’t just order more. But aha! I had some store-brand paprika in the big spice cabinet. Great!

Every serving of it I eat, I get a red rash the size of a baseball perfectly centered on the inner bend of my arms. I only eat one at a time and keep the rest in the freezer so I can separate them for obvious reasons, and try to drink water and detox between. (Poverty: suddenly less picky about food.) But the point is:

Obviously this is not the same. I don’t react to the other at all and it’s definitely paprika. The store brand stuff clearly has some kind of filler or additive that my body hates.

Anyway: even the macros can vary a little.

But here’s what I have in my ‘single ingredient’ spice spreadsheet in case it’s helpful.
Most my info comes from the USDA unless there is a label.
If there is no info on label or USDA I use the closest equiv herb for estimate.

Very interesting; I had no idea. I don’t know why, but I just blindly assumed that spices had no calories and no carbs, I think because there is no label on them. Figured if there was no label, there was nothing to report. It’s a good thing I don’t eat many veggies, because I use a lot of spices when I make soups, dressing.

Thank you.

Just found out another possible mistake. I assumed everyone on Keto was eating mostly Beef, like 80% or more of red meat. So that’s what I was doing…80% red meat/beef. But just so other new people know, you CAN eat mostly non-red meat, like salmon and chicken liver being the top two super meats; as well as sardines, mackerel, oysters, chicken, tuna, eggs of course. My grocery bill thanks me for this.

When I started keto and I was in a state of major brain fog and carbohydrate withdrawal, I was counting all my carbs and trying to stay under 20 g of carbs per day. I though I was doing great, and after a month when my keto flu passed and I got my clarity, I was looking through my food diary and realized that I wasn’t totaling my carbs for the day but only for each meal so I was actually at around 40 or less grams of carbs per day LOL Thank goodness I was only eating 2 meals a day, had I been eating 3 meals per day that would have been 60 grams of carbs.

See I am the opposite, I like onions if its not overdone But I could live without them I don’t miss them

However Have to have fresh garlic in butter sauces, and for fresh spinach cooked in oil and garlic and so many other things but I have learned to use wisely and use less But I won’t give it up

Having kebab meat and thinking it was carb free. Big mistake. May as well have had 2 slices of birthday cake given how badly it threw me out. Only 2 weeks later did I finally see the scales move again.

(bulkbiker) #95

I watched some Dr Berg videos …

Wow Kebob meats have carbs?

I am not surprised, I actually made that mistake with gyro meat myself

Thought kebob meat was safe though I used to go to Zoes on occasion before the lockdown and get the chicken Kebobs there
