Funny and/or Dumb Mistakes We've Made Doing Keto

(Marianne) #61

For real!!!? I use that all the time, and a good amount. I am going to have to check the label!

(John) #62

Yeah - onion powder (and garlic powder for that matter) are fairly high in carbs - 5g and 7g respectively per tablespoon.

Consider that they are basically condensed and dried versions of root vegetables. And keto is generally about above-ground vegetables.

You can certainly eat and use it, but if you are being very careful about carb counts, it’s easy to go overboard with those two.

I use them both, but as a light sprinkling pre-cooking with some meats, and not all of the time.

That “just one bite” thought really got me yesterday and not even a full week keto. My kids had fries and chicken nuggets, I ordered a bunless cheeseburger and was 20 hours into fasting. What did I break my fast with?? A chicken nugget, just one bite. But no, it didnt stop there. I thought I couls mentally count carbs in my head, chicken nuggets can’t be that bad right? Just a little carbs…gothome and served my burger on a premade cloud bread, and a side of small fries rationalizing. Layer I logged ALL that I eat. Put me at 70 grams carbs. Anyway, I know I goofed and started my fast immediately, doing 20 hours with the treadmill to deplete my glycogen. KETO ON

(John) #64

20 hours on a treadmill. That will certainly do it. :joy:

This is a PRE Keto thing, that many, many people think. (and is probably a mistake) Thinking they can eat whatever they want, but if they do exercise, the weight will come off…in other words, exercise is way more important than diet for weight control. Many people eat tons of ice cream, pizza, colas, pretzels, bread, sugary desserts, etc and exercise a lot; but the weight doesn’t come off. Then they wonder why.
I see one young man walking to work every day; probably about 3 or 4 miles round trip. He’s quite a bit overweight. I’ve seen him doing this for 3 years now. Maybe because he doesn’t have a car, but probably because he thinks this is going to make him lose weight. His body hasn’t changed as far as weight goes. I stopped beside him in my truck one day and offered to give him a bicycle, thinking that would save him time, But he declined.
The common and seemingly true wisdom today on weight is that it’s 80:20 That diet is 80% of the cause/solution and 20% is exercise. Exercise IS good and important, but diet is much more important for weight control. Jack Lalanne might disagree :sunglasses: …but then he ate a very good diet too.

Yes, agree with this, and most people think that the calories they burn off by a walk or even a short jog can compensate for food. I once saw this video where they got a standard pizza and then showed how much exercise on a treadmill you’d need to burn off two slices of it. It was hilarious. Like… unless you’re an actual athlete, forget it.

(Davy) #67

Yep. People will go out and walk 200 yards, then come in and eat quart and half of Breyer’s or Ben&Jerry’s, feeling they earned it. I have done this in the past myself.

I accept that I am human, and I will make mistakes.
I have made TOO many since hitting my goal weight back in April/May of 2019.
Some were beyond my understanding at the time (Pork fat/Pork is inflammatory for me!
Who knew? I do now.) But Thanksgiving to XMas I failed to live up to my plan and went overboard.

I pounded (pun intended) on 20lbs above the 7 I was already over my goal.

I enjoyed HWC, Homemade ice cream, and many low-carb items I usually avoid for the reasons they are TRIGGER foods, and inflammatory to me.

The new year is hear, I am down 7lbs, and focused on eating right.

I realize I will NEVER be prefect 100% of the time. And I will learn things along the way.
I will accept my results, but I WILL maintain CONTROL over them so I NEVER return to the 307 lb person I used to be.

I had let a lot of things sneak in (BPC with splenda, etc). I am cleaning it up now. I will clean things up EVERY January. And I may decide to do a QUARTERLY cleanse to keep me on track in case I get “forgetful” (Lazy? Complacent?)

This is a WOL/WOE for me for life now. But that is no excuse to screw it up for mouth pleasures daily!

Great post! That’s my OWNING UP statement for 2020!
But it was the BEST Low-carb Ice Cream EVER. NOT hard. Friends agree it was better than Rebel and HaloTop (and far less calories than HaloTop)… Creamy on the 4th day of being frozen!

I was on Atkins 20+ years ago. Was doing great with the diet and took off something like 50lbs in no time (oh how it would be great to be young again). Atkins had just started getting popular again after it had a surge in late 70s early 80s??. My dad had done it back then and decided to do it again when I started dropping weight.

Anyway, he is one of those people that loves the spin off foods and Russel Stover’s had the low carb knockoffs that was full of an ingredient that I hadn’t heard of (hey guys the internet wasn’t as fast back then, so you just seen net carbs on the package and went with it). I was fully introduced to sugar alcohols after that. The candy had two or three net carb grams and as long as I stayed under 20 grams for the day I figured I could enjoy it. I truly could of played the scene of Jim Carey on dumb and dumber where he makes a blowtorch with his flatulence. I went days before I finally figured out what was causing it…

  • I thought I needed to over exercise every other day. I’m talking 39min HIIT, 45 minutes weights AND 20 minutes jumprope. Didn’t even wait to recover before jumping back again. Needless to say, spiked cortisol significantly which may explain why my initial fat loss was slow. The little muscle I gained back then stayed though.

  • I used too much sweeteners (Sacharrine/Sweetex). Probably didn’t help. Also had “maltitol sweets” Talk about a little please for a lot of pain.

  • I wasn’t watching my Omega 6 consumption. Cue the nuts, nut flours, seeds and bad oils. Viva la inflammation. Cut down on them & increased my Omega 3 and my inflammation is gone.

  • I ate lean protein just because I was used to doing so. Took a while to mindfully switch to fatty protein which I feel much better on ( although I’ll still do lean meat if I can’t find grass fed )

  • I initially did not realise just how important it was to take and balance ALL electrolytes (not just sodium). Took a while to double down my efforts and find the balance that worked best for me. Felt better once I did.

-Did not eat enough vegetables. Did not understand the importance of getting my nutrients from them. Felt better once I started having a good amount.

I went to the gym religiously Mon-Fri for 6 months. Didn’t miss a single morning. Hardly lost any weight. Didnt even drop a dress size. I start Atkins, Bang! Drop 1-2kg a week. Dropped 2 dress sizes in 8 weeks.
This was 15 yrs ago, so being younger prob helped. The exercise prob helped with metabolism too.

My stupid mistake was trying to cook ketofied meals. I had to watch ingredients, portion control, expensive substitutions… Keeping the diet simple is best - meat, eggs, evoo, butter and histamine-friendly veggies, done

(Full Metal KETO AF) #73

Ask a Carnivore. I like onions too but don’t eat them now, and my meat and eggs taste nothing like cardboard. Onions are sweet and have sugar in them. Yes, I cut them almost completely out about 10 months ago. Your tastes adjust in time.

oops, 20 hours fasting THEN the treadmill :crazy_face:

(Joey) #75

Great thread.

In my case, the funniest and/or stupidest mistakes I’ve made occurred while eating the Standard American Diet.

Yeah. By far.

#76

You’re right, maybe we should start a list of all the stupid mistakes we made on SAD! :joy:

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #77

Not eating unless we’re hungry—what a concept!

(Marianne) #78

I checked for a label on the onion powder and there is no label - no nutritional information (?).

(Full Metal KETO AF) #79

@gingersmommy One tablespoon of generic onion powder

That is just shocking. What a bummer, although I guess the most I use is 1-1/2 tsp. in like four cups of liquid when I make soup. I am going to google “chili powder.” Probably be shocked at that, too.
